Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.

Hi there, I read that you have given your little one probiotics. I purchased some today but there doesn't seem to be much info on how much to give to a 3 year old. Also, The one that I purchased has lactose in it. We are on a low lactose diet do that may not be such a good idea.

Thanks for all your valuable advice.

Sorry to jump in. :) When I was giving them to my older two dd's I got a powdered form and would add to something they were drinking. Here is what I bought http://www.smartbomb.com/slr4835.html It was one of the only ones that I found that was milk and soy free. Andrea

So sorry to butt in :)
Hey, I just read your post and let me say I was up late last night and first thing this morning doing my homework on the probiotics and from what I have found is lots of great reviews for Culturelle and Udos Childrens Choice blend.

I was on wiki and it says that the use of probiotics actually helps break down the lactose in your body and helps to alleviate the symptoms of intolerance. The thing about probiotics from what I have gathered is they are made from partially digested (fermented) milk therefore it breaks down easier in our stomach. Probiotics do the dirty work for your stomach.

I am no pro here but I like digging for answers and exploring all my options. From what I have read intolerance to milk happens because it goes through a longer fermentation/break down process then the average person. Like for instance my husband can only tolerate skim milk but the 2 % gives him stomach cramps & gas and the whole milk lets just say that is like kryptonite to him.

I know there are people with allergies to the protein in milk so they do not fit into this catergory...I think? I still have to dig on that aspect of it. Will be more than happy to share my findings if your interested?

I for years gave my kids "Yakault" thanks to my mother in law not really knowing what they really were, i just thought it was a yoghurt drink. When we moved to San Diego they were not easy to come by. Now that Julian is suffering from GERD I find myself looking for ways to ease his pain.

Any how back to my research, I also discovered that Yakault has a really high sugar content and not nearly as many actual "live" cultures. I do see the difference they make though because when we were in Chicago julian was nearly symptom free and required no meds.

Needless to say I am going to give Udo's a shot because between that one and culturelle they have a lot more "live" cultures. From what I read it may make him a little upset in the tummy but that is just because they are going in there and cleaning house.

According to what I have read the dosage is one capsule a day for regular balancing and you can give a second for days with upset stomachs, nausea, diarrea, sour stomach, and even during thrush, diaper rashes and twice a day for up to 10 days after a round of antibiotics. All you have to do is break the capsule and sprinkle it into juice, apple sauce things of that nature.

Hope this some what helps :)

I give my 4 and 5 year old chewable probiotics made for children. The box says it may contain mild traces of milk protein, but IS recommended for children on a low lactose diet. They are called Buddy Bear chewable probiotics by Renew Life. They are orange flavored and my kids like the taste. I give my youngest the powdered kind in her sippee cup, which is by the same company, but called Flora Baby. It is made of the same ingredients as the chewables, just in a powdered form.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
We use the GNC Strawberry Chewable Acidophilus. It says on the container that it contains milk, but is suitable for those following a low lactose diet. We mash it on a spoon and mix it with pureed fruit, but your dd would be old enough to just chew it. I've never tried them, but they smell good!

Both of my kids take a probiotic and have for at least a year. They take Sugar Free Yum-Yum Dohpholis. It is dairy and soy free. I do not like it as much as I like some others they were taking (simply bc these have to go in the fridge and the others didn't) but other than that I like them and the kids love them!

Every one has so much great info. and I love it. We tried culterelle and a few others with Meggy with no results. Maybe trying the ones u mention that are lactose and soy free would help.
