Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Gastritis vs. Reflux
Does anyone know if there is a difference between relux and gastritis. Just talked to surgeon to find out how severe her inflamation was from the reflux. SHe searched for Katie's chart and read from it chronic gastritis. Is that just another word for reflux.

should have asked the doctor but I never think of things until after I hang up.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I was told by an ER doctor that gastritis is pretty much the stomach flu. I have no idea if this is accurate or not, as the ER doctor was actually a moron in many other ways...

I know gastritis can cause the following: a burning pain in your upper abdomen and, occasionally, bloating, belching, nausea or vomiting. It can also lead to ulcers if not treated.

For most people it is not serious. It can also cause a feeling of fullness. I guess they checked for H.Pylori?

Hope this helps.

I wonder if gastritis is treated the same way as reflux. It is so worrisome about these docs. She said it was reflux and then read from the chart gastritis. Maybe it is basically the same and treated the same??????

Yes, one of the biopses was for H.Plori. We don't have any biopese results yet.

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

As a teenager, I had a diagnosis of gastritis, and it was treated with Tagamet. After treating it for several months, the condition went away, so I am thinking that there is some difference between that and reflux, although I'd imagine that they are pretty similar. Maybe with gastritis the irritation stays in the stomach but with reflux, it is in the esophagus. I am only guessing, but perhaps with gastritis, the acidity only has to be resolved for healing to take place, but with reflux the acidity and the reflux have to subside for the condition to improve.
Like I said, just a guess. . .

Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
here is a site for you http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gastritis/ I only remember about gastritis b/c there was a dr on Emily;s GI "team" that was sure she had gastritis and not reflux. The Upper GI and Endoscope proved that she had inflammation in her esophagus and not in her stomach. So the way it was explained to me was that gastritis is when there is a either an over production of acid and is causing inflammation in the stomach or a bacterial infection or virus has caused the lining in the stomach to deteriorate and the stomach acid keeps irritating it so it won't heal. It's possible to have reflux and gastritis at the same time if the LES valve is weak and lets acid through to the esophagus. With AR it;s in the chest throat area, with gastritis its more the stomach, but treated with antacids like reflux. HTH!

I think Kat is right. Gastritis can be a complication of having too much acid as is GERD. It's just in different places... at least from my own understanding.
Check with your
doctor first!
