Sharon, Mom to Elyse, 17 mos (15 mos adjusted-preemie). Zantac/Elecare. History of: Respiratory Distress Syndrome with ventilation/CPAP/cannula, tpn, n/g tube, PDA, jaundice, apnea, bradycardia/tachycardia, severe anemia, blood transfusion, reflux, Sandifer's Syndrome, intestinal malrotation, hemangiomas, MSPI, feeding issues. ICU inpatient 53 days! 2 surgeries, 2 UGIs, barium enema, pH probe, endoscopy. Developmentally on target now! PIC: Yobaby Beard
Observations re: infant/child weights/heights/ages
I have mentioned before that a lot of people approach me and ask me Elyse's age, and then they say "she's so petite", and then I say "well, she's a preemie" (I don't go into reflux or anything). However when I see her with other kids her age, she is taller than them! I think because she is so animated and mobile they assume she is older than her build makes her look or something.

Yesterday I brought her to work with me to drop off some stuff and one of my bosses asked what size she wears, I said mostly 12 mos, and she was amazed because her 6 mo old dd wears 12-18 mos and is 21 lbs (same weight as Elyse). Then later that day I went to a mom's group thing and met a baby who at 8 mos is 33 lbs and I don't know how tall, but TALL. I tried to not make any comments about his size or weight, bc I know from being here that a lot of moms get upset about those comments. I bet she gets WAY more comments than I ever will.

It is amazing to me what a huge range there is in size between kiddos!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
It is amazing! Good for you for not saying anything. My big mouth would have opened before I even thought about it. You know...Morgan only weighs 45lbs....33lbs--8mos??? Wow!

Oh and Maggie was born 8-1 but ya know, she's petite too. She's only around 24lbs and about 30in now probably. I guess she's gonna be a squirt too. :)

maia m - GERD. Nissen Fundoplication w/hiatal hernia repair.
Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
Plus, kids just grow at their own rates. My son was big -- 20# at 4mo. :) Very chunky BF baby. Now, he is a small 8 yr old. I know part of that is reflux -- we had troubles w/ switching meds, he lost weight, etc. My dd was a big baby (born 9# 3oz) and is sooo skinny now! W/ her, it is reflux + Multiple food allergies. Limited diet + high energy level! :D She is tall and thin, but so am I.

It is important for everyone to remember there is a wide range like you said. People always comment on how big Nicholas is. It doesn't bother me, but I can see where some people can be sensative. I just try to comment on cutness or personality or something over size.

Worry Wart mom to
27 mo. reformed "happy spitter"
34.8lbs , 37in tall(oct)
Diagnosed A/R at 6 wks
Zantac until 1yr then Prevacid
Med free since February 08
peanut & egg allergies...still
Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
That's why they need that big old chart. The kids are so different.

My son was 9.95 at birth and he was 90-99% for weight and height until 18 months. He wore a size 8 shoe at 18 months. He is way bigger than my tiny niece who is exactly a year older than him.

Now he is 90th weight but only 85th for height (2years). So, I think it all evens out eventually. Of course there are big and small adults but most of these kiddos will be average. That's why it's an average, lol.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Yeah, it always cracks us up because people comment on how big they think Lorenzo is, but I'm pretty sure they're just distracted by his enormous head. He's just over the 75% for height and just below 25% for weight, but his head has always been above the 90%. We're hoping all that space is full of brains... :)

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
That is why I always laugh when people say my second child is so big because he is so small compared to my other child. My first child was always in the 95% for height and weight until well after his third birthday. He weighed 29 pounds on his first birthday. My second child who is 20 months right now only weighs 24 pounds which is 30% and he is 50% for height. So I always look at them like their crazy when they say he is so big. The Man what are you feeding him comment is just as painful to the Mom with a big child as is the comment are you feeding him comment to the Mom of a small child.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I went to our family reunion today, and I swear, everyone was saying how huge Sebastian is. I am 5 foot 3 and my husband is 5 foot 8, so people are amazed that I have a giraffe baby. My husband's father is 5 foot 9, but he was the bniggest kid in his class every year until seventh grade. I hope this doesn't happen to us because I WANT SEBASTIAN TO BE TALL! We have plans for this child. My DH will teach him to play basketball, and he will be drafted into the NBA, and I will retire when I am 48. The only thing is that he has gotten extremely interested in kicking his toys everywhere, so perhaps soccer is his game. And it doesn't pay as much as the NBA. :)
Check with your
doctor first!
