What's this-Is it a continuous spasm
Meggy has dealt with the pain of spasms literally right below the tip of her sternum for a long time now. Usually u can see the spasm, hear a loud gulping sound and then screams that will shatter your heart.

Tonight she was screaming so loud. I couldn't calm her for anything, then she literally seemed to pass out from exhaustion. When she finally did sleep and I started to finish buttoning up her jammies, I noticed her tummy moving. Looked like a heart beat if u know what I mean. It was continuously going up and down. Then lower in her intestines I could see what looked like something jump-like the way I could see her elbows an knees when she was in my tummy. It was just for an instant and then gone.(The jump in the intestines) It is very strange. Didn't know if that might be different kinds of spasms too r not.

Earlier today she was very weak and fainted. She fell back hitting her head on the sharp corner of a wall. The pedi said she was fine and sent us home. She is still having diarrhea. We don't see the GI till Tuesday, and we don't go to John Hopkins till next Friday Sept. 19.

Does anyone have any clue what this is, or what I should do? Have u ever heard of this?

She has just had a very trying few weeks here and I really want her feeling better soon

We have not found a new pedi yet. Didn't know we would need one so soon.

What could cause diarrhea this long?

Hmmmm....have you ever read my story? (it is very outdated right now). Check out Elyse's intestinal defect that she had surgery for and see what you think, if you think the symptoms match in any way. I bet everyone here gets tired of me bringing this up, but it is something I feel I NEED to do, because it could save a life. Intestinal malrotation. What made me think of it is the spasm you are seeing in her tummy. In intestinal malrotation, the intestines are free floating and spasm suddenly. it causes severe pain where the child can be fine and then suddenly screaming, and then just as suddenly, stop.

it can be hard to diagnose. We saw 4 radiologists before hers was dxed, and it was a pediatric one who finally told us it was life-threatening (in her case), while the others thought it was nothing, or something she could live with. Upper GI made them suspect it, and barium enema confirmed. A lot of kids are not diagnosed until around 4 yrs old we were told, but hers was severe and caught at 3 mos (1 mo adjusted!)

ALso, the diarrhea thing....sometimes with malrotation, the intestines get totally blocked so they stop pooping altogether. In other children, things get slowed down....the firmer stuff gets stuck while the watery stuff shoots past the blockage. elyse never pooped on her own. Sometimes she did not poop even when given a suppository. When she did, it was massive, blackish diarrhea. Even after her surgery she continued to have diarrhea though for MONTHS, just a different color and it finally came out on its own!

Please don't let me scare you. It is a rare problem, and it's fixable! I wish I had thought to tell you sooner...the spasm thing is what made me think about it because a lot of the kids here have chronic diarrhea.

I am so glad u shared with me. I am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open right now, but I will certainly read about the intestinal maltrotation later today.
I appreciate all of the help and support. I was so thankful to meet all of you. We were dealing with just so much when I found this board and all of you have made me feel so comfortable and open.
Not one person ever complained that I was hogging the board or anything. All of you just came right in and helped. I have had more help and support in the few weeks I Have been here than I can describe.

this might be a crazy suggestion, but wanted to throw it out there because of something I have experienced. When I was a teen I was very underweight. At night, I was experiencing this awful *pulsing* feeling in my stomach, which felt like my abdomen was going to explode. The doctor said it was because I was laying down and underweight, there was no fat to *cushion* my organs and what I was feeling was my stomach/intestines doing their job. I just wonder if what you are seeing is in relation to her being so small....and she was laying down, right? Our organs contract and do all sorts of funky things for digestion. That's not to say there isn't something more going on, particularly if she is screaming in pain. I sure hope you get it all figured out at Hopkins. HUGS

Maybe u r right about the laying down part. It just seemed more than I have ever noticed before. U have some great ideas to take into consideration.

If Michelle felt like like tummy was going to explode, maybe that is a reasonable explanation! Yay for easy answers if so. Meggy is SOOOOO cute.

Ok, I know I am weird but I can see my pulse right there where the sternum/stomach is. I have always been facinated by pulses and heart beat. I used to watch my pulse in that area and think it was soo cool. Maybe it was just her heart beat? It would have been beating especially hard since she had just had a difficult experience. Just a thought!

that is an interesting theory. Thank you. I don' t think u r weird. In college, I bought a stethoscope just to hear my own heartbeat. The doctor told me I had a heart murmur and I wanted to be able to distinguish it for myself.

I can actually see her pulse in her neck, so your explaination makes sense.

Check with your
doctor first!
