Adults with AR-Warning might be TMI
Hi everyone. I have been so wrapped up with taking care of kids that I am forgeting to take care of myself. I have a few ?'s about Adult AR. I have been having symtoms for a year now but have ignored them. But lately I have been choking on small amounts of food and having heartburn at least once a day. This started shortly after Nolan was born when I had the first choking spell. I thought I was just woofing my food down too fast and not taking the time to eat because I was attending to his needs. I choked then I ran to the bathroom and made myself throw up. Sorry TMI! Then I kept noticing when I was eating it was like my throat would close up. But I could take a drink and wash the food down it was no problem. I had 3 times where I was choking so bad I had to throw up. Last night was the lastest. I have problems with noodles, bread and meats. I have started to cut my food super small, taking smaller bites and it is still happening. Does this sound like ar? I really was scared last night because I actually couldn't breathe for a few seconds. What terrifies me the most is that I am home alone with these kids all day and what if I choke and pass out. It could be hours before anyone would be home to find me. Does this sound crazy? I want to know if anyone else has with adult Gerd has ever had this happen to them. Thanks in advance.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Oh my.....I don't think this sounds like AR, but it manifests itself in unique ways. Have you been checked at all for esophageal stricture? Or delayed epiglottis function?

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
My friend has adult AR. She always felt like she had something stuck in her throat. She went in for a scope and it is reflux. The GI said that when the issues are with the throat it is almost always stress related. She takes Nexium now and feels much better/

maia m - GERD. Nissen Fundoplication w/hiatal hernia repair.
Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
I had esophagitis (changes to my esophagus, but not yet Barretts esophagus) and also choked on many foods. I had to have a scope to rule out Barretts, EE, etc. High doses of meds didn't help (80mg Nexium), and I had structural issues (Hiatal hernia + really crappy anatomy) so I had a fundo 1 mo ago. I also have esophageal spasms. Those hurt like crazy -- feels like a heart attack. ((hugs)) and get thee to a GI!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hey Amber. I don't have AR, but my mom does. She doesn't choke, but sometimes she gets a feeling like a hunk of food is stuck in her throat and ends up in pretty bad pain. She said it feels like she is having a heart attack! She actually ended up in the ER about a month ago with chest pains...but it ended pu being an AR flare.

BTW, it doesn't sound crazy to fear that, but I do think you will be OK. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CHOKE AND PASS OUT, BUT IF YOU DO, Your kids would come to your rescue. Hell, Sebastian called 911 two weeks ago from my parents', and the state police called back and yelled at my dad. I am sure your kids would get you patched up. BUT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CHOKE AND PASS OUT.

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Sounds like what my uncle describes. He had a hole in his esophagus (if I remember right) and his meds have made it much better. He still sleeps elevated and tries to watch what he eats.

Meds: Nexium 10mg 2x daily. Carafate as needed, miralaxx as needed, probiotics daily
I had it as a teen and I always felt like I had a lump in my throat and needed to throw up. I had the scope and it was pretty simple. Then I took nexium to heal the damage. It really helped.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Amber, this is exactly what my husband was going thru. He had a scope done last year and turned out that he had "webs" in his esophagus from years of Silent AR (that he has not really had much pain from either) its called schatczi (or something) web. he had them "blown" out and he's been much, much better. i think you should definitely think about having the scope. in the meantime, do you take prevacid or anything your self? anyway, you wont choke and pass out. dont worry! it is more a 'sensation' than anything else!

Mom to Peter - 10 months old with reflux on prevacid and dairy allergy
Amber, I'd go into your doctor and tell him/her your symptoms. It sounds like more than a passing thing and its affecting your daily habits (ie cutting up your food smaller and eating different food items) so it seems like its something that woul need to at least be looked into.

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
Amber have u noticed if it is related to certain foods, or ingredients? Have u had any allergy testing done within the last few years. Though it may be AR it could also be related to allergies too. Triggered by foods you are sensitive too. Nexium helped me a lot too. Wish u the best.
I don't think it is bad for u to fear that at all, just natural. That sensation is not fun and it is very scary.
