ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

Is this Weird?
So I finally decided to go ahead and try to take Ethan to a pediatric GI. I checked the providers on my insurance, and the ones that are in-network are all associated with the local children's hospital and work out of one office. I called, and they said that they are full on new patient appointments, but to call back next week, and they'll have their October appointments open. I expected a wait for an appointment, but waiting to be scheduled ???
It must be something with Pediatrics around here, we have to call and actually speak with the pediatricians nurse to get an appointment there, instead of talking to an office person. They could generally have seen him that day, but it takes up to two hours to get a call back, and by then the day is mostly over. weird.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
wow really? there is not a schedule apt person to speak with?? that is weird

At Cooper's specialist for the first appt you have to leave messages and then a nurse will call and schedule you. It was a hassle, but the good thing was for us, she heard how severe his breathing was over the phone and got him in for his Bronch the following week. It usually takes 6 weeks, so that was a good thing. But the whole call back next week thing is weird. Did you ask about a waiting list?

Patti, mom to Max (3/04) with EE and chronic sinus issues; Lucy (6/07) with reflux
I think it really depends on the hospital/department. We see several specialists out of CHOP (Children's of Phila.). Their allergy department only schedules appts. two weeks out. Other departments work the traditional way. So, if you don't call first thing on Monday morning to allergy, you need to wait two more weeks to an appointment. They moved to this way of scheduling because a few years ago it took up to 4 months to be seen. Unfortunately, I thought once we were in the system/department, scheduling would not work this way - but it works this same way regardless if it is a follow up or new appointment. I understand the reasons why they moved to this scheduling, but it makes it extremely difficult for working parents to only know a week or two before an appointment. I often have to cancel business trips, etc. due to last minute appointments. Good luck! - Patti

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Could you have your ped call for the appt? We did that and Allie was seen within 36 hours of the call.

It just seemed strange to me, but it is probably like what you are saying, and I just need to call back ASAP on Monday to get scheduled. I didn't ask about the cancellation list, but I am not really too concerned about waiting. My thought is that Ethan seems to be doing fine on Prevacid, and he is growing, sleeping okay, and not terribly fussy, so it is probably working fine.

I just don't have a lot of trust in my pedi when it comes to his reflux, so I thought I'd get a specialist on board to manage that issue, so I wouldn't get hassled on keeping him on Prevacid for as long as he needs it, etc. Unless I am way off on his symptoms, which is possible, I think the visit is more for my peace of mind than to deal with unresolved issues.

Thanks for the input on the scheduling. :)

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
We had to wait a month for the developmentalist to call us back to schedule an appointment. Uuuuggggghhhhhhh.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
My OB/GYN does that, but I have never really figured out why.And yes, I think it is weird in your case and mine.

The endo. office we scheduled with is similar in Atlanta. The docs. had to receive Meggy's records, review them, then agree to be her docs, and still a 2 month wait.
Check with your
doctor first!
