Hi, I wanted to start a new thread and welcome you. We had a very similar experience with my dd until we were able to get her on the same meds (she still hates to see me coming at her with that blue bulb syringe...). Zantac is very weight sensitive, so it could be that your son needs an increased dosage. If he still doesn't get relief from Zantac, you may want to move to a PPI like Prevacid or Prilosec. Prevacid was a lifesaver for us (although it did take some time to work).

As Sharon said, rice cereal can cause constipation in refluxers. You may want to try oatmeal instead (I recommend Beechnut). Unfortunately, the most frustrating thing about reflux is the trial and error. I hope you are able to get some relief for your son soon.

We didn't have any luck thickening my dd's feeds. She couldn't tolerate oatmeal and rice made her cough (weird). Even when we were thickening, it didn't make her vomit any less. Some moms have had luck with Simply Thick, which is tasteless and doesn't fill them up like cereal does.

That being said, if he's a vomiter, there may not be much you can do except get him on the right meds so he's comfortable and wait it out. My dd, who vomited like a geyser EVERY day, finally slowed down her vomiting around 8 months and stopped completely (except for very occasional spit-ups) at 9 months, which was about the time that she was sitting up all of the time.

A pedi GI should be able to help you a lot. We were fortunate that our pediatrician was able to handle most of Halley's issues. However, typically a GI will be more aggressive with treatment. Has he undergone any tests yet (upper GI, ph probe, etc.)?

my doctors nurse said not to give him anything besides the rice because he is only 9 weeks and their worried about him being allergic but they also told me last week that he is too young to have any allergies. im confused

Ugh, he's a silent refluxer...pain-wise that's even worse than a vomiter, since it's burning coming up and going down. Poor little guy. It sounds like you've done a lot of the right things - I'd try to make an appointment with a pedi GI right away.

APP W GI
i did i searced around and got him an app at the childrens hospital of philadelphia tomorrow,no thanks to his doctor but i guess moms always know and do best so i cant wait to see what the gi says. my doctor will not switch his meds, hes on zantac and he upped his dose to 1.3 every 12 hours and its not really working but he said hes too young for any other meds. he actually wouldnt even let me put him on cereal until 2 days ago but another doctor in his group put him on cereal a week and a half ago and my doctor didnt even know which made me mad im probably going to find another ped because its just seems that no one communicates well in their office

So glad you were able to get him in quickly! There are a couple of moms on here that send their kids to CHOP. My dd was put on 15 mg of Prevacid at 6 weeks of age. This was after we tried Axid.

What I would recommend in preparation for tomorrow's visit is to jot down a typical day for your son - including feeding times, observations before and after feedings, the bm issue, etc. Sometimes a video is worth a thousand words, so if you can catch him doing something that concerns you that you can show the doctor, that may help. Good luck tomorrow - let us know how it goes.

Check with your
doctor first!
