lauren'smom
Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
Lauren's 15 Month *Well* Visit and now a HEART MURMUR!
Lauren at 15 months now weighs 21 lbs 13 oz (just less than 50th%) and is 32 inches tall (85th%). Pedi was pleased with how well she's been eating and the mile stones she's met. She said her weight gain is a little slow, but it's nothing that she's overly concerned about right now.

Then she started the physical exam, let me remind you we were there exactly one week ago because of the hives Lauren had from the Augmentum. As soon as she listened to Lauren's heart she stopped and picked up her chart. Then she called for the other doctor to come in and listen. The both agree that she has a very definite heart murmur. One week ago when we were there she says she did not hear it. This literally scares the crap out of me because dh had a hole in his heart and had surgery when he was a baby.

I know it could it be nothing, I know she could totally grow out of it and be a fine, healthy, active child. I keep trying to think that and stay positive. Pedi also said that a heart murmur could contribute to slow weight gain...

I feel as if someone has kicked me. I finally feel like we are starting to close the door on reflux and now I am taking my baby back to the hospital for an echo cardiogram. I feel like I want to scream --- GIVE ME A BREAK ALREADY!!!!!!! There are so many babies that never see the hospital again once they are released, I am so jealous of that!

Anyone have any reassuring stories about heart murmurs? I am really trying not to google it...I know the chances are good I'll read something horrible.

I totally understand what you are going through. We had no sooner gotten rid of one of Max's specialists when we were being referred to a cardiologist for a murmur. His murmur is completely innocent...we don't even mention it to anyone per our cardiologist's instructions. The cardiologist that evaluated him said that it is very common for kids to start being diagnosed with murmurs after a year or so because the kids tend to be quieter during well visit exams and thus docs are better able to detect murmurs. I was just as worried as you - and I did google a hundred different things on murmurs before I went - and 99% of what I found was extremely reassuring - a vast majority are innocent. We were told to wait on going to a dentist until the murmur was evaluated, though, just in case it was something. Not sure if you are taking Lauren anytime soon, but thought I would mention. Those with heart issues usually need preventative abx before dental work. Good luck and keep us updated!

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
So sorry! Hopefully it will be absolutely nothing! Hugs!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Well, Jen, we were told that I have one when I was little. I've never heard another word about it. As far as I know it hasn't affected me at all...if I even really have one.

I wouldn't get too worried right yet (easy for me to say).

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
(((hugs))) I know it is impossible not to worry, so I'm not even going to say that...but I do want to say that I had a murmer at about her age and it never caused any problems. It was gone before I was old enough to remember, so certainly by age 4 or so. They didn't find it until after a year of age. She's happy and active, right? I think that you would probably know if it was bad enough to cause any problems, and that they will probably just 'watch and wait' in that case. Is your appointment happening soon? The worst thing is to hear something like that, and then have to wait...so I hope they'll get her in fast so you can put your mind to rest!

Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
I agree with you about NOT googleing it...I always seem to have the NEGATIVE things pop up.

I had one as a child...I must have outgrown it...I just called my mom and she said that after the age of 2, the ped had nothing to say about it. They didn't even do an echo-cardiogram on me "back in the day". I am so glad they are being pro-active with it.

I am so sorry Lauren (and you and dh) have to go thru all of this...she has been doing so good. I am going to be on pins and needles until I read an update on how the test goes.

I have been so crazy busy with Adam and Nate starting school and vacation last week...I can finally catch my breath...if you want to talk, PLEASE call me. I may not answer right away, but I will call you back. Take care and I am thinking of you.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
HUGS
My Grandmother and my Niece BOTH have innocent heart murmurs. The only compilcatin they have is they must have ABX before dental work or any surgical procedure.

I hoep you get some answers form the cardio. I would ask them to go ahead and do an EKG and an Echo just to cover all the bases KWIM??

Jedd's cardio. is VERY good. He's been doing it for almost 30 years. He's old as dirt...LMAO. Really he approaching maybe 70. But he's awesome and keeps current on his stuff.

From Jedd's EKG he thought Jedd had an ASD. The Echo confirmed that Jedd had a VSD. so gettign both together is the way to go. MORE info is WAY better.

Both test are pretty NON invasive. As long as the child will lay still for them. If the tech. doesn't volunteer it ask them to put avideo on. Just in case I would bring a portable DVD if you ahve one with a fav. movie.

It can take a little bit to get all the pictures of the heart they want.

I wish I could go with you. Jedd has had sooo may EKGs and Echos I can tell form the pictures what is going on...LOL

teh most interesting one he ever had was the one they di dthe week before surgery. Xince we already KNEW all of what was oging on they actually put the ECHJOmonitor in color fo rus. That was exciting becasue all the red and blue blood was TOTALLY mising together EVEERYWHERE...NONE of the blood was flowing properly.

It never ceases to amaze me that Jedd was able to be cared for at HOME. I now other children locally who were not that fortunate.

So,now I'm rambling. I pray all goes well. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much for all the reassurance and good feedback.

Jessica, the pedi did say that she'd have to lay still...that will be interesting!

My previous drivers license was also stolen. The new one has extra security features on it.
Meggy hardly lays still for anything but she would watch the monitor and it seemed interesting to her. The tech also talked very soothingly to her. It was nice to see her not panick for something like this. Her heart Murmur was innocent. Now we don't know if she still has it or if she just screams too loud during exam to hear it. It was certainly reassuring to hear the cardio say she is perfectly healthy heart wise. It also ruled out one more thing. We have done 3 repeat echo's for recheck.

Hey there Jennifer, Elyse was born with a PDA, most likely due to her prematurity. She also had bradycardia AND tachycardia. She had 3 echocardiograms. One was routine due to her gestational age, one was done because her whole body was turning slightly blue when the heart monitor that she was on 24/7 didn't pick anything up, and the 3rd was a follow-up. I was scared to death for the second one and had all these horrifying thoughts that we would lose her because I looked up "blue baby syndrome" on the internet (what they thought she might have). But she *only* had the PDA.

My best friend's dd had a heart murmur that they repaired via a catheterization (they went up a vein in her leg or something). I know that in newborns they try medication first, then surgery if it doesn't work. My first cousin had a big enough hole that it appeared fatal, but he had surgery and is fine. He is 22 years old now and works in construction.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
I've had a heart murmur my whole life. I was a long distance runner, a police officer and a work alone landscaping contractor. Never a problem. Lorenzo has had one that is only heard intermittently, which is the same with mine. Hopefully the same will be true for Lauren, and until you find out more, just keep repeating the reassurances to yourself -- even though I know it is the hardest thing in the world to not feel freaked out about any unsettling news about our children's health. ((HUGS))

Mom to
Son (10) GERD(aspiration pneumonias, apnea, tracheomalacia), Food allergy, Asthma
Daughter (6) GERD, Heart Murmur, Food Allergy, Asthma, Mold allergy
Hug, my little girl has a murmur. It was never there, and then boom, one day it was! (Or they never noticed it before, but I guess it is pretty "noisy" LOL) To be sure of what kind of murmur it was, we saw a Ped Cardiologist. Our regular family doc was right (my dd's murmur is a Still's), but it was nice to have the expert opinion~

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Glad to hear about the weight gain and the height increase.

Sorry to hear about the murmur :( Coyle was born with 3 holes in his heart and one ventricle left open. (two are open @ birth and are both supposed to close). His holes have since closed (so the murmur is gone) but he still has a ventricle open {i think that is what it is, anyway). The cardiologist called it a "normal variant" and that he will lead a normal life as far as the heart is concerned. I'm surprised the pedi said that the murmur would cause slow weight gain... until she has an ultrasound she can't be sure of how big the hole is...and the ECG/EKG will test the heart strenght, right? {i'm so not a candidate for the medical profession} And, in my opinion if it was that big then i'd think they would have caught it before her 15mo well visit, kwim.

and, she's in the 50% which is a great weight.

Coy, has had two ultrasounds of his heart and a ECG & EKG. he's done great with all the tests and he HATES to be touched!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Gotta run to the dentist, but I jsut wnated ot say quickly that I have had a heart murmur since birth. I've never had a problem. I had an EKG again in July, and still no problems. I've run since I was 14 and have never had a problem. I had a healthy pregnancy - no strain on my heart. From what I know, most murmus are nothing. More later!

Eric has a murmur (VSD) & we're not sure if it closed up yet or not. The cardio. wasn't concerned because it was small & even if it never closed it wouldn't impact his life except he may have to take antibiotics before dental work. Chin up. Ellen

My younger sister had a heart murmur as a baby/child, and it never caused her a problem. Lots of people have them, and they can be totally innocent. As you are aware though, sometimes they are a problem and need to be repaired. She went on to have congestive heart failure/multiple organ failure at about 15, but it was unrelated, she aqquired Toxic Shock Syndrome. She's doing better now. I hope Lauren's murmur is nothing terribly concerning, I have a little Lauren of my own, I would be nervous too.(((hugs)))

doctor first!
