Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
Emily GI appt.
Let me first say, taking 2 babies (well one a toddler, a VERY active won't sit still toddler...) by yourself to a children's hospital with 4 open waiting rooms that have toys in 3 of them, .... hard work!! There's more to write on that subject but i have a limited time here today so i'll leave it at that.

The GI increased her prevacid. I told her about emily's tantrums and giving her mylanta. She said it was weird that it would work b/c at this age AR episodes occur in relation to eating and if they were AR pain related tantrums then they would occur close after meal time. I for the life of me could not remember when i was giving her mylanta. So i will be writing down when i give her mylanta from now on.

She did however say that it is possible that she did not grow out of her DGE and that would cause her tummy/AR pain hours after eating which mylanta would help. I told her that emily no longer spits up nor do i hear her chocking anymore. She said it is still possible that she could have it and as babies get older it sometimes gets harder to hear them silent reflux and if it has been going on for a while she may have gotten used to living with it. so sad!!

So she thinks the best thing we could do is to get a PH probe and a Milk Scan to retest the DGE. I asked about the Impedance Probe and she said that is used in cases where the motility disorders of the Esophagus is suspected. Since Emily is suspected to only have AR and has no problems throwing up or spitting up a PH probe would be sufficient. DH is not crazy about her getting either test since that would mean a 2 day hospital stay for his little bug. I don't want her to have the tests either but if her not having them is hurting her more then..... *sigh*

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
You are one tough Mama surviving taking two kids to the doctor. You could start with a Milk Scan since that doesn't require an inpatient stay. It took about 3 hours for Aidan's and if it does show DGE still just treat for that instead of doing the probe. Having DGE would obviously make her reflux worse so ruling that out first seems like a good first step. My GI says ph probes at this age are pretty silly because it is so much work to keep the probe in them because they are so active and mobile. If you don't think she is really refluxing much I would skip the probe. Most likely it won't provide you with many more answers other then that she has reflux which you already know. Although you might be able to see if a tantrum correlates with a low ph etc. Sorry I am not trying to say don't do the probe I just don't know how much it will help.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
UUMMM an Impendance isn't used for that, it's used for Reflux. Jedd had one done at a nationally re-known children's hosp. that is WORLD known for it's motility clinic. Things that make you go HHHMMMM and scratch you head.

I hoep the upcoming tests go well. Gald to hear the dose got upped as well.

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
I hope the tests go well!

Just wanted to add that the motility test used for espohageal purposes is called a Esaphageal Manometry test.

There are all sorts of manometry test. They can do colonic ones, esophagus one, Antro-duodinal ones, I am sure I am missing some. There are mabye 8 of them. They had a huge board up in teh Man. testing room for us when Jedd had his test done. I was shocked at how many there were.

Weighs 25.8 lbs
8 lbs 11 oz at birth.
Recovered Chronic Projectile Vomiter
Prevacid Free since September 08
Egg allergy diagnosed Jan 26/09
Has a Pectus Excavatum
Has an Epipen
Honestly, I know it just plain sucks to have testing done, but wouldn't you rather KNOW what is causing her pain and her not tolerating it? Has she had a ph probe done before? I really wanted one for Rory to know the extent of her reflux, but our hospital isn't equipped to do them. If you are going to increase her prevacid dose, you would have so much more peace of mind knowing it's absolutely necessary, kwim? I wish you the best of luck with the upcoming tests. At this point, with Emi being almost 2, you deserve peace of mind. HUGS!!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
First of all, I'm SO glad that you're GI listened to you. Hopefully the increase in Prevacid will help her. I know you don't really want to do any more testing, but I agree with the pps, at least it will give you some information to base your future decisions on. Sending big hugs to Emi and her tired mommy :-)

Our pH probe did not require an inpatient stay. Do they want her inpatient bc of the high likelihood of her pulling it out? i went back and forth on whether or not to have the probe done but we did do it and found it helpful.

It helped us to know when she was having an episode because we could look at the monitor. She makes this sound we call "growling", and it occurs during a silent reflux episode. We also learned than while a lot of her episodes were acidic, many were non-acidic, which made me feel better. The pH probe is what ultimately made me ask to downgrade from Nexium all the way to zantac, since we knew that a lot of episodes were non-acidic, along with her biopsies from the endoscopy showing no damage.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
wow, you have more patience in your pinkie than i have in my whole body, i'm sure! you are so tough Kat. Glad the GI is willing to help Emily out. I'm not sure about the testing but I hope you can get by with just the Milk Scan and go from there. HOpe the prevacid helps.

I was sad to hear that the GI said to you that it sometimes gets harder to hear them silent reflux. I hope she is not in pain :( i'm not able to hear coy reflux hardly anymore and it makes me wonder too.
Check with your
doctor first!
