Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Katie-from Katiesmommy
Hi! She did great! She was very restless since she didn't want to eat at 11:45 last night and usually gets a bottle between 5 and 7 and then goes back to sleep until 9. We got her up at 5:30 and she talked/played during the car ride which shocked me since I thought she would sleep. It took them a really long time to get to us and she wanted to be put down to play or sleep but she couldn't do either so she was not happy. Once they gave her a sedative she calmed down (of course) and it was only 30 mins later when they were done. She either has EE or yeast/mold; both of which were things that I had brought up to her GI. EE just because DH and I both have tons of allergies both food and environmental and yeast because I was given penicilian (sp?) for 12 hours while in labor. She had no inflammation and no obvious problems other than the white spots that they biopiosed (sp?). I can't spell right now since I can't think from exhaustion. I stayed up to feed her at 11:45 (which she refused) and then dreamed (can't spell past tense of dream) about endoscopes and Elecare and yelling at her pedi. Going to go take a nap! Thanks for the prayers and thoughts and kind words!!!!!!

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Hi Tracey. So glad things went so well for Katie. It was quite a long day for us too! We got to the hospital at 8:30 am and didn't get called in until after 11:00. She did amazingly well. So glad dear hubby came. He was able to keep her entertained. Her pictures looked good. SHe did biopsy for lactose, sucrose, celiac, ee and something else. We may increase her morning dose of prevacid depending on the results. All in all a good day but we are also exhausted. What a drain ! We get the results back in a week.

Katie's tummy really hurts. Does Katie's? She keeps saying that "the doctors hurt my tummy".

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Wait - EE or yeast/mold? What does the latter mean? I take it you had Group B strep? So did I. So did my sister (and my neice has a zillion food and environmental allergies).

She means esophageal candidiasis. It is a yeast infection of the esophagus, can be caused by several things, like antibiotics, steroid use, immunodeficiency, etc. Brent is at high risk for it due to the swallowed steroids that coat his esophagus for EE. It will be treated most likely with something like diflucan, and it should clear up nicely, although sometimes, it takes more than one round.

So glad both did very well. I hope that the biopsies provide u with information u need. I was surprised to hear of the yeast infection, I just never would have thought. How do they test for the lactose and sucrose? That wasn't checked with Meggy's endoscopy. I know u said biopsy but I was curious if it is a norm or extra test ordered.

Melissa, yes our GI indicated that it could be a yeast infection of the throat and yes I did have Group Strep B. I've brought it up before since (TMI) it gave me a yeast infection when Katie was under a week old. I wonder if I had let her have the Dilfucan(how do you spell it?) laden breastmilk we would have the troubles that we have had? Yes, I know it is too soon to be going down that road of all of the things I should have done since it could be completely unrelated. DH says I read too much into things since she (GI) only touched on treatment for yeast/mold and went into great detail about EE treatment. Of course being a woman I am analyzing that to mean that she thinks it is EE but won't commit until the biopsies come in. He says it could be that she explained the treatment in more detail because she knows that I am familiar with GERD and treatments for it.

She didn't gain as much weight as it feels like; only 2 ounces. We thought she had gained almost a pound since she feels heavier but she DID gain weight which is great! The developmentalist finally called today a month later to make an appt. and their first available is Nov. 3. Good thing she is starting to catch up otherwise she wouldn't be sitting up independtly until high school! :)

I am not sure how they test for lactose and sucrose. This is all still a mystery to me. The GI suggested these tests. I guess I will have to be prepared with a lot of questions on our follow-up visit.
