Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Pedialyte and juice
Hi all! Katies endoscope is tomorrow morning and she can only have pedialyte, juice or water after midnight. The problem is she won't drink water from a bottle and since juice makes her reflux worse she won't drink it no matter what. Pedialyte is very salty tasting and I am not sure she would drink it. Anyone else have a similar problem? I don't want to wake her up to feed her if she won't take it since we have to be at the hospital by 6:30 but I don't want her to be too hungry either.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I guess we were just mean, we had Jedd go hungry...LOL

I was always afraid to give him anything after midnight becasue I wanted him completely empty for his sedations. that way his chances were MUCH less of getting ill/sick/vomitting after coming out of sedation in the PACU.

Just what we did.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Are you going to give her her meds in the morning? I am not sure - I was going to wait to see if Katie woke up with a tummy ache.

Since your appt. is so early I would just let her be without any liquid if it is going to cause issues for her.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I agree with the pps - I'd just go without. To me, it's always better for them to have as little liquid in their stomach as possible for those types of procedures.

Love the new picture!! She looks like a more like a little girl than a baby :-)

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!!! Sebastian hated juice when he could have it, but for some reason, he thought Pedialyte was delicious. Katie might surprise you. They also make an unflavored kind (they gave it to Bassy in the hospital), but I don't know if stores sell it. Please post when you can tomorrow or so. I'll be thinking of you.

Thanks ladies! Dh and I talked about it and since it will only be water or pedialyte we don't want to wake her up to give it to her since it won't be like she is eating and we agree with you guys that an empty stomach is probably best. She threw up everything the day of her UGI and I can imagine this will be the same. I will update tomorrow!

Mine didn't mind the pedialyte, but if you go without, they have the sweet ease at the hospital usually, which helps edge the hunger pain. It's just sugar water that you can dip their passifier in (if they take one). It seemed to help Nicholas.

Don't know if that only works for smaller babies or older ones too.
Check with your
doctor first!
