ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

OT- Sleep question
Apparently sleep is the topic of the day!
We have been working on sleep training with Ethan since Thursday night, and he is actually doing great at night. I wake him up three times in twelve hours to do feedings, which I am shortening by one minute each night. The only time he cries is when I first put him down, so I am feeling pretty positive about the whole thing.
My sleep book says that for naps I should put him down every 2 to 2.5 hours for at least a 1 hr nap. Ethan has been taking two naps each day, of about two hours long for the past couple of months, and he seems content with that. He goes down between 1.5 and 2 hours after he last woke up. I am trying to follow the sleep book, because they say naps are so critical to overnight sleep, but I can't keep him up the full 2-2.5 hours, without him screaming and fussing.
What do you all think, should I continue trying to follow the books plan, or should I just follow Ethan's lead? I'm thinking I'll follow his lead, but if any of you have been through this, your input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you should listen to your baby. If things are going well at night I wouldn't try to change his naps. Some kids need more or less sleep then the next. I think books are suppose to be a guide because there is no right schedule for everyone.

Diagnosed A/R at 6 wks

Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
I agree that schedules are "suggestions" in the book. I would not mess with a baby on a good sleep/nap schedule. My son was on that exact schedule all on his own: 2 hours up, 2 hour nap, 2 hours up, two hour nap, 2 hours up, bed time. It was great and I could plan my day around him. He was clockwork. This is an example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Def follow his lead. Every baby's Awake time is different. If you keep him up too long he will get over tired and this will make everything worse. Abby would slowly add on A time every few wks.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
I agree with Amber. My sleep book says actually 1.5 to 2 hours for babies that age for the first sleep window. 3 hours max after that nap until the next one. coyle could only go 1.5 hours until he was 8 mo. old and then only 2.5 in the afternoon. now @ 12 mo. he can do 2 hours and 3 hours even tho the books say most can do 3 hours in the morning. he also probably can't go the 2 hours because of the interrupted sleep. only babies who sleep *uninterrupted* for 11-12 hours can do 2-3 hours in the mroning w/o a nap. do you mean you wake him or he wakes himself to eat?

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
yeah i agree.. follow him. if he was happy with his way... and it works... stick to it. Joslyn still takes 2 long naps and about 2-3 30 min naps during the day. Her long naps are about 1-2 hours long. Good luck**Jacky

Thank you guys.
mom2coy, I am waking him to feed him, to avoid having him wake and send a mixed message about what we do when he cries in the night. I think after tonight we stop that, however, I will continue to do a "sleep feed" whenever I go to bed, just to make sure he is getting enough to sustain him.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I would definitely say follow his lead. Use the books as a guide, not as an absolute. I tried following the book timetable and ended up with a super overtired baby. Now we kepe the naps roughly the same (give or take 15-30 min, depending on when he last awoke), but otherwise ignore the clock. Glad to hear the training is working!!

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Go with what works for you guys! Katie as a newborn didn't want to eat every 1-3 hours like the pedi's said but every 4 hours. So instead of waking her up to eat we waited till she was hungry. I think they have their own schedule just like we do. Glad the schedule is working (stay away jinx fairy!)
Check with your
doctor first!
