How dare the Pedi
I had called before telling Megan's pedi office that she had reacted to the vaccine and asking for information on it. The on call doc. said she didn't know, but Megan should be fine. She told me to call the office in the morning for the ingredients. So we did nothing. Megan still isn't acting herself. Her spasms are worse. ******************** I called the office and they transferred me to office manager voice mail, who did not call me back. So, I go in today and tell them again, she had a reaction. She is still not herself, I want to know the ingredients. They told me it is protected information and I am not allowed to have it. So I ask what company make the vaccination. They said the same thing. It is protected information. I told them this is a little girls life we are playing with and that I need to keep up to what she reacts to. They still refused. Thankfully, after leaving the managers office, I walked into the hallway and see a nurse carrying a vaccine. I just very casually say, "who makes your vaccinations." She told me MERK. How hard was that. ************ We see the doc. again tomorrow because she is still having diarrhea and it is bad. She looks so pale and weak. She is hardly playing and very grumpy. I will tell the pedi. that I intend to make INFORMED health choices for my daughter, and I will know the ingredients of anything else that is put into her body in any shape or form. ************** His way of getting me to do the vaccinations so far even when she is sick is to say it might kill her not to. I think I will inform him, it might kill her to have it. I prefer her not be sick when she gets them considering she already has low immunity. ******************* How do you tell the pedi. and other docs. that you will be an informed parent no matter what it takes, without them getting offended?

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
Welllll, my question is: who cares if they get offended? I probably offended my FORMER ped a few times and I still don't care. These are OUR children, not theirs. They should appreciate the fact that we care and if they don't, then I don't think they deserve the privilege of handling their medical needs. How can they even say that the ingredients are protected info? That's just stupid.

I believe this: a good doctor wants informed patients and a good doctor will not get offended when you ask questions. Secrecy makes me think they are hiding something. Have they been sued or something? They are a little paranoid, aren't they? My Pedi has a list of all the shots, who makes them and the ingredients. The list is laminiated and attached to a clipboard in the exam rooms. I always look at it while I wait. They gave me one to take home but I can never find it.

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
our way of thinking: if they go against our concerns then we will change pedi's! we r the parents here! i think stephen (DH) would have already been asking me to find a new pedi!!!!!!!!! the nerve of them!

Patti, mom to Max (3/04) with EE and chronic sinus issues; Lucy (6/07) with reflux
I would be furious and probably switch peds if this happened to me. Our son has EE so I understand your concern with the inactive ingredients. Our peds office makes us sign a form for every vaccine they give our kids. The form has the lot number, manufacturer, etc. of each vaccine. I don't see how they can keep this information from you. It is very shady, if you ask me. Since our son has so many issues with odd things, our ped actually recommended to us that we give each shot individually and few weeks apart so if he does have a reaction, we will know which vaccine caused it. I hope your daughter feels better soon. - Patti

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
i agree with all the moms on here...it may be time to fire that crap pedi. Protected info? NO, IT IS NOT. You are paying for that shot, after all. That is such a load of bull. They are just scared of getting sued. I am thrilled with some of the peds at our practice (although I love Sebastian's main guy), but I am pretty sure they would all be concerned if I called and told them about such problems, not all weird and evasive. I still cannot believe they won't tel you. With Sebastian's allergies, you can be sure I see everything in writing now before it touches his skin or lips...and his docs know it. That is just the way it is. You and Megan deserve that, too.

Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
I think that is insane. Our pedi has no issues giving us any info on the shots and answer any questions we had/have. If they started refusing info then we'd be out of there very quickly. I'm REALLY sorry you've had such a bad experience Like others have said- if they're a good doctor they won't get upset w/ your questions.

Now that it's mentioned, my doc also has me sign every shot and it has the lot# etc right there! Very smelly operation. Call the health board and report them! I am getting all worked up now!

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

My goodness! I agree that I would find a new pediatrician. Ours thinks we are crazy because we question vaccines, as well as many of her other recommendations, but I firmly believe that it is because she feels threatened that we don't just trust her.
I probably would not only change pedis, but I would log a complaint against this office with my insurance company, and any other consumer advocate out there who keeps track of doctors. With all of the questions and concerns about vaccines, the whole process should be completely transparant so that each consumer can make an informed decision.
I do hope that Megan is feeling better soon.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I'd also say find a new office. Nothing you asked for is protected, except by perhaps copyright/patent (somehow, I doubt you want to make your own vaccine and discredit Merck) You can get read about their vaccines here: MerckVaccines.com

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
i'm with everyone else on this one. call the health board. report this behavior. switch doctors. while vaccinations are 99.9 percent safe for most children they are not safe for everyone. esp. those with severe allergies and compromised immune systems. i can't believe they can't tell you. what vaccination was it?

Well, I'd never darken the door of that pedi office again. They are certainly flip with the health of your daughter. Hope you are able to figure out the cause of her discomfort.

Thank you everyone. I certainly feel supported. It feels good to know you are all behind me and cheering me on. It is so frustrating when health care professionals think our children's health should be kept a secret from us. We are doing vaccinations one at a time and the pedi had said if she reacted he would have the antidote to it. Of course no one was around to give it to her. It was the chicken pox vaccination. They gave it to her I believe last Thursday. Miserable vaccine Is it too much for me to ask the doc. not to leave my daughter so miserable! It has been 6 days. What gives. She still has diarrhea and no one wants to find out why. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks she has had black diarrhea that showed positive for blood on a home test.

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
Personally if Jedd reacted liek that to any of his shots and it lasted that long. I would NOT get any more shots on him. I have taught 2 children (brothers, different years) who did not get shots due an older sibling dying in infancy due to a reaction to his baby shots.

I also have 2 nephews and a niece who do not have any other their shots as well. They are just fine as well.

If it continues I'd take her to he ER if the pedi won't do anything. Seh can only go so long without getting dehydrated.

That all said, I'd fire the pedi as well. That doesn't sound like a good working realtinship.

Ditto what everyone else said! We left the first pedi without worrying one bit what he thought! And I was honest on the survey they sent me too, asking why we switched docs...civil but honest.

S_rew them. You have to protect her at all costs. I have been through two allergist because they were not for my son's best interests. The first one gave me a hard time for even questioning if he had allergies. He told me to see a derm. for his eczema. Of course, when we found the allergens & cut those foods, the skin cleared right up. P.S. Any chance the diarrhea is due to food? Or did it just start after the vaccine? I haven't had Eric vaccinated in a while for fear of what they may do to him. I'll address it with Children's Hosp. Ellen

The diarrhea started after the ingestion of soy yogurt. The CDC website says the vaccination should not be administered if the child is moderately or severely sick. Therefore I would consider long term diarrhea moderate. Her mood and playfullness was fine before the immunization though, but not anymore. She is still laying around and whiny and not wanting to eat or play or be touched. It makes u feel helpless cause u think the least u can do is hold her and try to comfort her, but she doesn't even want this. I think she must be hurting so much.

Do you know if she's allergic the antibiotic neomycin or gelatin? I'm wondering if maybe the gelatin was made from something that is making her sick. A call to the CDC may be of some help. I'd also find another pedi and get her seen as soon as possible. Sending big hugs to you and Meggy.

she is allergic pork and that is what the gelatin is made from. It is a very well known allergy to her pedi. Thank you.
