Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Teething Or Reflux?? And Sleeping issues
As a first time mom, I found it's hard to tell if Matthew is having a teething or reflux pain at night. He has been on Prevacid for 17 days and I saw major improvements. However, he still sleeps only 9~10 hrs (2~3 hrs nap & 7~8 hrs night sleep) compared to about 11~13 hrs of sleep when he didn't maxed out on Zantac and the reflux was in control. After the 10:30pm bottle, it takes him 1~2 hrs to get back to sleep with us holding and walking him. He whines and cries if we stop moving around. He sucks his thumb to sleep. I notice his breath doesn't smell as acidic as it was a couple days ago. He still fights going to nap at first but can fall asleep after a while. For the past 2 days, he wakes up from sound sleep and screams 2 ~ 3 times during the night. He just broke his 1st tooth and obviously has teething pain from swollen gum during the day. Some sleep experts (incld. Dr. Weissbluth) say night wakings are not related to teething. But I heard from other moms that it does cause night wakings and sleep/nap issues. My GI's nurse said that her son woke up screaming every 2 hrs for a week when he was teething. My other twin son, Aidan, who doesn't have reflux, takes longer to go to sleep/nap and does wake up screaming at nights too, but he still sleeps well, about 13~14 hrs/a day. I think it's the teething and separation anxiety issues in Aidan's case. We'll have a follow-up with the GI coming up to see if Matthew is doing well on Prevacid and the 15mg dosage is good or not. I am trying to figure out if Matthew is having reflux pain at night. During the day, he still has some pain/discomfort 30mins after eating, specially in the evening, but he is a much happier child, starts playing and smiling a lot again. Does your baby have problem falling sleep, or going back to sleep or napping issues while teething? How do you tell if it's a reflux pain or teething pain? Thanks a lot for sharing.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
The biggest difference I notice is that if it's teething pain, there won't be any arching or pulling the legs up. Allie mainly cries and starts chewing whatever is handy when she wakes up from teeth. If there's reflux, we'll hear it when we pick her up (the gurgling and sharp swallowing) HTH

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Oh geez...I still can't tell. I used ot think that for Sebastian, it was teething if he stopped crying when I picked him up, but now he screams if I hold him (or don't hold him) at night whether his reflux is under control or not! Argggh! I hope you get some advice on here so 1) you and your kiddies get some relief and 2) I can steal it for myself.

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Well, I think it depends on your child. I was dreading Katie getting her first tooth and she had two days of being cranky while eating only and then for a few days after if she forgot that her gums hurt she would bite on something hard and then be in pain. Have you tried Tylenol to see if that helps? For teeth the Tylenol helped but not for reflux. She does scream in her sleep if her reflux is out of control. Katie also took 6 weeks for the Prevacid to really kick in; I know most show improvements within 2 weeks but she took much longer. She was on 1.6 ml of Zantac 3 times a day and it gave her migraines so we switched.

Same here. Very hard to tell. Nicholas is working on his first tooth. His sleep is now all out of whack. I am still guessing, but when he awakes he is chewing his hand. I also listen to see if I hear more refluxing (as he is more of a silent one) but I still wonder how I will know when/if he needs to increase his prevacid dose. I guess looking for the arching is a good idea because he did arch before and isn't so much now. Good luck.

Thanks so much for everyone's advice. We've had guests over the last couple days plus my husband is on business trip. The house has been chaotic. Matthew does arch his back crying at night. Thank God! his naps are getting much better these days. I am pretty sure now that it's the reflux rather than teething. My pedi GI called me yesterday and told me he didn't think it's the reflux since Matthew is on Prevacid. Per the GI, the Prevacid should kick in within 2-3 days!! I definitely don't agree. We didn't improvements until day 11th or 12th and after 20 days, he is still having symptoms at nights. It's good that I made the decision to change GI. Hi Mom2coy - both Aidan and Matthew get the 10:30pm bottle. They used to fall back to sleep right away. Aidan screamed after getting the bottle for 2 days and now back to his usual easy falling sleep pattern. They go to sleep around 7~8PM and then we feed them again around 10:30pm. Sometimes Matthew wakes up earlier or later then I feed him then. We usually wakes Aidan up at 10:30pm to feed him, which I hope we can phase out by 9 month.
