Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Why is he crying constantly in hs sleep? Do your kids do this?
I really don't understand what is going on with Sebastian. FOr the last week or so, he has been rolling around in his bed and crying and crying and screaming and crying every 20-40 minutes or so. I see him do this on the video monitor. It is going on ALL night. He doesn't really seem to be awake because most of the time, he is lying down and when he is awake, he lets me know - he sits up. I guess a few times he has sat up and then fallen over, crying. He is doing it now. Sometimes when I go in, he calms down. Other time, I can pick him up and he just screams and fights me.

I don't know if these are night terrors or not. Sometimes, he screams out, but usually he just starts crying hard and loud out of nowhere! I don't know if this is because he is overtired? I have been working so hard to get him back on two naps because he was such a wreck for the few weeks he was on one. During the day, he naps ok, but not great - anywhere from 45 min to 1.25 hours per nap. He runs (well, not runs, walks) around like the Energizer bunny ALL day. He just doesn't sit still. I am scared it is ADHD. But maybe he is just being a newly mobile kid? I have no idea.

He is an EXTREMELY active sleeper.

Any ideas? I just don't know what to do or think. Mom2coy - I think I remember you saying Coy was crying in his sleep...if so, was he like this?

Thanks in advance, ladies.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
emily sounds a lot like him, always on the go. she is an active sleeper as well. she would cry in her sleep not as much as bassy but often before we got her reflux controlled at night. Just like jazz and bassy she would fight comfort. I remember a mom here telling me that there are developmental milestones that come up in kids that directly correlate with their sleep habits. I hope this is a phase but if i were you i might consider adding mylanta or maloxx to his night time bottle and see how that works out?

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Katie cries in her sleep when her reflux is way out of control. It is sometimes the only way I know she is feeling worse. Back before Prevacid she whinned all day but not at night; when she started crying at night I demanded the GI consult. She also will fight being held if she is waaayyyyy too tired. She won't let me hold her or rock her; she just wants to be in bed. If she is hungry but too tired to eat she will sleep for like 30 min. and then wake up to eat since the edge is taken off.

Ditto for Elyse on the active sleeper, and always on the go. She used to cry/moan a lot in her sleep, and has also recently several times done this really scary breathing noise. We talked about this on pager several months ago. I don't know if it's a reflux pain thing, night terrors, or what, but I sometimes have to wake up Elyse because I can't take listening to it. She does not take comfort well either. She won't let me rock her to sleep anymore, which i thought I would like but since it's the only time I can really "cuddle" with her, it is disappointing now. Why don't you do a search on this site for "night terrors" and i bet it will come up with one of our old posts on this topic. I am going to do that right now and see how old E was when she was doing this a lot.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Generally, night terrors do not appear in their full fledged form until after about the age of two. A child experiencing night terrors will generally appear to be "awake" with eyes open, but seem to not see or understand their surroundings. They are usually quite intense experiences, and last anywhere from just a few minutes to 20 or more minutes.

I have been doing extensive sleep research for awhile now, as we've been traveling this crazy no-sleep path with Lorenzo. Discomfort can definitely cause the kind of behavior you described, and given Sebastian's allergies and reflux, that would be the first thing I'd be inclined to examine more closely.

That said, I want to let all of you know some of what I found out about Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which is what Lorenzo has been diagnosed with. Here is an informative link on the subject: http://www.bcm.edu/oto/grand/121996.html . There are many symptoms in children that differ from those found in adults, and it is still not very well understood in infants and you ng toddlers. It is particularly challenging when there is no snoring, or only intermittent snoring. This is often the case when reflux episodes are causing the obstruction. Even Richard Thurber, source of the Thurber Method of sleep training, says that sleep apnea is very under estimated and under-diagnosed in young children, and he urges parents who are concerned about it to really push their pediatricians for diagnostic tests.

That is actually what prompted me to push for more investigation into Lorenzo's sleep issues, and sure enough -- Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I don't want to freak anyone out, or suggest that every sleep issue is sleep apnea related, but please, do educate yourselves about it if you have a refluxer, especially a silent refluxer! It can have serious long term consequences, as well as quality of life consequences.

Okay, I think I am ready to get off my OSA soap box now... :)

I was surprised to read this because I just watched a show last night about sleep & they had a small boy (about 6 or 7) who was so hyperactive during the day. His poor Mom, who was going crazy, brought him to a sleep clinic because she heard him snoring. They taped him (with all the probes) and realized how often he was waking up & the poor quality of his sleep. After they removed his tonsils, his behavior changed considerably. I'm not sure what is causing Sebastian to cry in his sleep - my guess is allergies/reflux - but it may very well be the cause of his "ADHD" behavior. Ellen

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Hey there. I'm sorry that he is having such trouble sleeping. Is he doing the same thing during naps? anyway, when coyle would cry in his sleep it would not be all night long like sebastian. he would wake up twice a night, sit up, and cry. then i would feed him. this past week he's slept thru 3 nights and woken 4 nights once. i've fed him each time he woke up.

on occasion, when he is super super overtired or going thru something (new tooth, new milestone, etc) he will cry during the sleep interval transitions e.g. 1.5 hours after going to sleep. when he was really young i'd go in there and pick him up-which would in turn disturb his sleep and make it worse. now, i give it a few minutes and he just falls back asleep. this has not happened in awhile though-since the seperation anxiety has calmed down a bit at bedtime & nighttime.

to me, if he is crying in his sleep all night long then i believe that this has something more to do with what lorenzo's mom is talking about..either related to reflux/allergies/OSA or something like that. i started reading Weissbluth (the 1980s version) and he says that GERD does not disrupt sleep... UGH? i wonder if his new book says something different. that being said i think it might be wise to talk about this with the pedi..

as far as the "hyperactivity".. i think it is normal for some kids to behave that way (mine included) and normal for others not to. my mom said i was the same way. when my sister came along she actually thought there was something wrong with her because she was so calm and loved to sleep. we are the same today... my brother was totally different too. he was so great at playing by himself and was totally not hyperactive. just content, kwim. he is the same way today as well. i'm a believer that we are born with our personalities. he's probably just really intelligent and curious and will probaby achieve great things in his life.

i wouldn't worry about his activity unless you think he is *wired* because he is not getting enough sleep. in that case, you might have to find ways to get him to settle down?

Thanks everyone! I am still at a loss. He definitely doesn't do it in his naps. He goes down around 6 or 6:15 and then it starts about an hour and a half or so after. It doesn't go on all night - it just feels like it - but it definitely continues until sometime after midnight, maybe 12:30ish? (he gets up to eat around 1 or 2). It stops until 5 or so, and then it starts again around 5:30-5:45ish. He is up for good by 6 on the nose, usually. He looks soooooooooooooo tired constantly - I think he is all puffy right now because the ragweed numbers are through the roof. He also has bad indoor/outdoor allergies that I really don't think are responding to Singulair. Sigh. I don't think it is apnea or anything like that because he doesn't snore or appear to have breathing troubles, but he does wake up with a nose full (and until recently, a bellyfull) of snot. Blueleopard, I wonderif it is his allergies/reflux. If so, what do I DO? Sigh. I know that is a rhetorical question...

hmmmm.. i don't know. id have to say that if he is going to bed @ 6 then you are doing the right thing by putting him down early to compensate for the crap naps. i'd have a hard time thinking that it would be overtiredness from that standpoint. maybe he is itchy or uncomfortable? with his allergies i'd learn toward that. esp. since his reflux is more under control now? it could be the seperation anxiety but that typically doesn't cause crying for that long.. just a wake up, settle back down to sleep kinda thing.

Man, I wish I knew. Eric has all the same issues. He is now developing allergic conjunctivtis due to the ragweed. He woke up with a blood-curdling scream due to this the other day. Does your guy rub his eyes a lot? He also wheezes daily. I'm waiting until the allergy dept. at CHOP tells me what to do. None of the local allergist have been of much help. I'll let you know if I get any good advice. Ellen
