Another thickener question
I'm still debating the whole cereal thing...but had a question. I thought the cereal helped with the reflux because it made the milk "heavy"- so in theory it would be harder for it to come up. I actually added it for Amalia though because she choked so badly while drinking...not really for the reflux (thank God Atalia does not have this problem). Now, the simply thick it- it is usually used for swallowing/aspiration issues- I have never heard of it being used to actually prevent the milk from being refluxed. So my question is- does the simply thick it also make the milk "heavy"- if you know what I mean? Thank you so much for your input- you don't know how much I appreciate it. God Bless.

Yes-it makes it very thick as well. My GI said she actually had put babies w/ severe GERD on the Simply thick just to thicken it. Does that makes sense? There are different consistancies to thicken. Nectar, then Honey and then there are more. Aubrey was on Nectar.

yep it makes it heavy just like cereal would. if you go to http://www.simplythick.com/ they have more info on it. I remember when i worked in the dietary section at a nursing/retirement home they would use it in foods to keep them down while some patients were on medications that often made their stomach bring the food back up. it was also suggested for emily a few times for her GERD but since she did not have aspiration issues it was not pushed, In retrospect i wish i would have got it. I hope you can find something to help

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
I wish Katie's pedi had told me about this instead of rice cereal! Good question Mely, I had wondered that too but never asked!

It works so good for our son. It stopped 90% of his refluxing that he was doing even on meds. There are 3 consistancies (nectar, honey and pudding) so you can really customize it. The great thing is, if you start with nectar (for example) and decide you probably need honey, you don't waste anything. Instead of 1 packet of nectar, you use 2 and that is the honey consistancy (though you will want to order honey after that runs out because it will be cheaper). My son is on honey consistancy and it works incredible. I hope you find something that helps.
