Quick update on Atalia and question
Atalia weighs 11 pounds already and is on the solutab. There are little to no signs of acid in her reflux...she is the happiest baby in the world when awake unless she has trapped gas or is very fatigued from not sleeping. The problem now is that she ALWAYS refluxes into her nose when sleeping. leading to immediate congestion and her waking up. She is already SUPER ELEVATED when sleeping...our only other thing to try is thickening the milk, which I really did not want to do until 4 months of age but sometimes it gets frustrating and I wonder if it will help. The cereal never helped Amalia with her reflux and she had trouble digesting it (we did oatmeal- beechnut) so that's why I'm weary but on a day like today (has slept about an hour since 2:00 pm,...it's 9:15 pm)...I was really thinking to try it one of these days during the day and see what happens. My question is, - what size of Dr. Brown nipple do you guys use to thicken the milk with 1-2 tsp of cereal per ounce? CAn't wait to catch up on everyone but right now it is truly impossible- it was a circus this AM trying to juggle putting Amalia to sleep for nap time and me taking a shower and eating lunch with Atalia waking up constantly. However, I am truly blessed and God is always there for me. God Bless everyone.

We used Dr Brown's Y shaped nipples. We thickened with 2 tsp rice cereal per ounce. Wow, had to search the memory banks on this one. I swear your brain blocks out the traumatic things!

The cereal definitely didn't help my refluxer either. I think it is way too hard on their little bodies to digest. I would highly suggest using a thickener like Simply Thick instead of cereal.

Is simply thick something you need a prescription for? Do you get it a the pharmacy? Thank you lorenzomama!

Another suggestion is to use oatmeal instead of rice. The problem we had with that is that when he vomite, which was constantly, instead of it being white it was brown. It just looked discusting.

I don't really think it helped Korbin to thicken his formula. He still vomited constantly. Maybe it would have been more if we hadn't thickened it. We didn't have any secondary issues with the thickening (constipation, etc).

I have read about simply thick here but I don't know anything about it. I thought that was more for getting the calories in that the babies who aren't eating well need. Is that wrong? I know my little chuncker didn't need anymore calories than the cereal gave him. He probably didn't need those either!

Let us know what you end up doing and how it worked out. ~Ronya

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
Rice helped Lauren tremendously, BUT we are lucky and don't have any food allergies or DGE here. I know Danie and Jen (mommy2to) use simply thick all the time. I think you have to order it online and it's not cheap. My GI always recommended "Thicken-Up" instead of Simply Thick. Our Walgreens didn't carry it, but could get it for me in 1 day when I called about it. I never used it because Lauren did fine with rice cereal.

As far as the Dr. Brown nipples, we used the Stage 2 and 3. Lauren would take 100 years to drink from the Stage 2 so we switched to the 3. We couldn't use the Y cut because of her aspiration problem. It's really kind of a guessing game...

I am glad Atalia is feeling better and hope that she sleeps more for you soon!

Simply thick isn't a calorie booster it is just for thickening formula to try and reduce aspiration. Or at least that is what we used it for. We had to thicken to different consistencies (honey, nectar) at various times. You don't need a prescription for it you can buy it online or over the counter at most pharmacies. We got ours at Walgreens. Some insurances will cover it if there has been proven aspiration.
