Toddler Feeding Schedule
Hi all. Those of you with 1 YR + kiddos who still have reflux. Can you possibly, when you have time of course, post a makeshift feeding schedule for your toddlers. right now coyle is still getting mostly formula (24 +) ounces a day.. but, i've found that more solids = less reflux (FINALLY) and i'd really like to start getting him more on a regular schedule. This is what his day was like today:

445 am 4 ounce bottle

730am 6 ounce bottle and some waffle & blueberry jam

930-1045 nap

10:30-6 oz bottle and crackers & fruit

12:30 lunch with some formula in cup

2-4 pm nap

4:15 6 oz bottle did not want snack

630pm-picked @ breadstick, noddles, fruit, carrots

7pm-6 oz bottle

as you can see, he really does not each much solid food because he is still drinking so much formula... i'm afraid to stop the formula because the weight gain last 6 weeks was so good but i don't know what is the *right* thing to do.

thanks!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Ok...I am obviously no help here, but thanks for asking this, Kelly. I am going to save these tips for the day when Sebastian starts eating again!!! Hope you get lots of advice!!

8 lbs 11 oz at birth.
Recovered Chronic Projectile Vomiter
Prevacid Free since September 08
Egg allergy diagnosed Jan 26/09
Has a Pectus Excavatum
Has an Epipen
This is our schedule recently:) 7:00 am Breakfast (yogurt, cheerios, fruit baby food) followed by 6 oz formula

10:00 am Snack (deli meat, cheese, water)

12:00 pm Lunch (either soup, soup & KD, KD & cream cheese) followed by 6oz formula

3:00 pm Snack (usually a treat like cheezies, cookies, timbits)

5:00 pm Supper (what we are eating, pureed, plus cottage cheese and fruit baby food, and 6 oz formula

7:30 6oz formula

I have found that limiting her formula to 24 oz has improved her eating a bit, but not her weight gain. I have really really been pushing the hi cal stuff and hoping to see a gain next week :) Nutritionally, it looks like he gets some grains and fruit, but I would HIGHLY recommend finding a homemade puree he likes, that you can add cals to. I was told that purees are more calorically dense that table food. Anyway, I'm off to bed. Could you send me your e-mail addy so I can share some info with you from the feeding clinic and my experience. I'm sure I can be of more help if I type you an e-mail :) HUGS

Michelle's right. Purrees have way more cals then table food. I am not sure whether or not Jedd's weight will take a nose dive when he does start taking reg. foods. That scars the pee out of me to be honest....that's why we still have the tube and don't have plans to get rid of it. :-(

Sorry can't help with the schedule, but we used to puree avacado's as they have tons of calories. I used to add milk because she liked it better that way. We would also puree bananas, but it is not near the calories. Sometimes I add flax mill for calories and fiber. Hope this helps/

thanks everyone. seems like he is eating on a simliar schedule to other kiddos. about the purees...um, he won't eat from a spoon anymore. i've tried everything.. including ice cream and he just won't. i might be able to take a few bites but that takes a TON of effort..and he really gets MAD if i try and even finger feed him anymore. he's not in to many "texture" like foods such as avocados, squash, sweet potatoes etc.. to calorie fortify i try and add butter, cook with olive oil, and give him full fat yogurt drinks in a cup.

since he slept thru the night again im going to assume that he can certainly go all night without eating. and, the other day he ate much better when i did not give him a bottle in the middle of the night. so, i'm giong to stop the nighttime bottles. i think i might phase out the morning bottle after the nap as well and stick to some of the snacks you've mentioned below.

If he won't take the spoon, I would try just giving him a spoon, with some puree of any kind in a bowl, and put some cheerios or pieces of fruit in it. If he's into self feeding, he'll likely enjoy dipping and finger licking :). It'll get messy, but it will get him more comfortable with the textures of puree by doing it at his own pace. If you give him breadsticks, you can also give him some dip in a bowl, like fruit blended with cream cheese or cottage cheese, or guacomole, spinach dip etc at let him have at it :) He sounds like he's exerting some independence, which is great!!!

hmmm... good idea. i've never been one to care about the mess he makes because i really believe it is about learning how to self-feed. but, it makes so frustrating because he gets *bored* with it real quick. one thing i am scared of tho is giving him the breadstick and him choking. i'm constandly having to tell him to *chew* and make sure he doesn't put too much in his mouth. he's always shoveling it in and then gags because there is too much food...

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
Kelly, your schedule looks great! I love those naptimes too!

Once I weaned Lauren off the bottle and formula her solid food intake really skyrocketed! I think she'd be ready to eat table foods only, but she's still not a huge fan of pieces of fruit or veggies, so I keep the purees around just for those purposes. BUT, the most I can get in her in the form of a puree now is 1 stage 2 container at a meal.

Here's her day: (sorta)

6:45 - wake up take prevacid

7:15 - in car to sitter's drink sippy of milk

7:45 - breakfast, usually pears or yogurt and then cereal, waffles or toast (whatever the big kids are eating)

10:00ish - snack

12:00 - Lunch, veggie or fruit puree and whatever finger food the sitter is feeding for lunch

12:30 - 2:30 - nap

2:45 - snack

5:00 - dinner, veggie puree, usually chicken or beef chunks, broccoli, noodles, etc.

7:00 - bedtime sippy

I didn't write down all the drinks she gets in a day because it's really impossible to figure out. She carries her sippy cup ALL DAY. I probably fill it 4-5 times. I only give milk because it's the most calorie dense. Even the sitter said she goes through a gallon of milk every 2-4 days with Lauren. Maybe she's drinking too much, but considering she was a bottle fighter I don't care! I also wonder if because her milk is not thicken and her formula always was if that's not the reason for her larger intake...

Thanks Jennifer, her schedule is really similiar to coy's. i'm lucky that the zantac seems to be working so i don't have to wait to give him anything to drink in the morning. it makes me feel better that she does not eat "breakfast" until 1 hour after waking up because sometimes the formula fills him up and then he does not ea much @ breakfast. therefore, i usually end up giving him more solids about 1.5 hours later. boy do i wish he would still eat purees!
