Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Diarrhea on Prevacid
Matthew switched to Prevacid fr Zantac 2 weeks ago. It has helped him a lot and I could see major improvements recently. He can sleep and eat better. However, he has had loose stools/diarrhea about 3 ~ 4 times/per day over the last 3 days. It must be the side effect of Prevacid. Have you had the same experience? How did the baby cope with it? The nurse told me we might have to switch to a new med. I'm scared to switch. We're waiting to hear final words from the GI. Thanks for sharing.

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

We actually have had to deal with constipation since Ethan has been on Prevacid. I guess that its probably like so many things with reflux babies, every baby is different.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
I have heard it is pretty common. My son has diarrhea with and without Prevacid so I don't think it was a side effect for us. Some children react to the lactose in the Prevacid. It is a tiny amount but it could cause diarrhea if he has milk issues. Is he MSPI or have a milk allergy?

He doesn't have milk allergy. He has been on Enfamil Gentlease (reduced lactose) and tolerates it well. He used to be on a constipated side with Zantac but it got better since he started solids and ate more veggie.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Has anything else changed recently other than the Prevacid? We didn't have diarrhea issues, but I know that some have. Hopefully it's just a passing thing, since it seems to be working. I can remember what a relief it was when it started working for us.

Nothing else has changed in his diet. He's teething but I don't think it's because of the teething. We've started to see him doing better with the acid reflux and then here comes the diarrhea thing. I noticed right after switching to Prevacid, he had at least 1 bowel movement/ a day, which was wonderful since he had been constipated with Zantac. But for the last 3 days, it seems he has to go every time after each feeding. I really hope it's a passing thing.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
coy's poops started going thru the diaper on prevacid. we had to switch him due to "burnt butt" or so i called it.. but up until recently he only tolerated alimentum. give it a few days, it could be unrelated.

Adoptive mommy to Micah (Feb 2006), Caleb (Mar 2007; 26 wk preemie, subglottic stenosis, BPD, GERD, dysphagia, FTT, in PT, OT, ST, feeding therapy, 30 mg Prevacid daily, mostly pureed foods, shakes & Pediasure) and Ethan (Feb 2008; 28 wk preemie, BPD, GERD, 15 mg Prevacid daily, Similac Sensitive/Alimentum)
I just looked this up myself because Caleb has been having diarrhea for about a week now. Here's what I found: Prevacid Oral Side Effects Constipation or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Oops, I meant Ethan! We recently upped his Prevacid dose from 7.5 mg to 15 mg daily. He also recently started Alimentum, so I'm not sure which one to blame!

From Prevacid's website, it also states the main side effects are diarrhea/constipation. My friend had Prevacid for 2 weeks and she had diarrhea but her daughter didn't...It depends on the individual. My pedi GI didn't think it's the Prevacid though and ordered a stool lab test which we will do first thing tomorrow. Honestly, I pray it's just is something else which can be treated rather than the Prevacid. It works well on Matthew and I hope we don't have to change that soon.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I can also add that my usually very constipated dd will have diarrhea right before she pops a tooth, so don't rule out teething as the culprit yet.
Check with your
doctor first!
