Speaking of breasts! Prayers please
I haven't been posting much either, sorry. On Mon night Cooper slept amazingly from 9:30-7:30!!! I woke up in shock and majorly engorged. I nursed on both sides, but it was pretty uncomfortable on the left. As the day progressed , my boob kept growing, and I quickly realized no milk was coming out. I tried everything, I mean everything, I even poked a hole in the duct with a needle and still nothing. Well, now I have a raging breast infection and a plugged duct. I have been talking to the LLL leader and lactation consultant, but they really have nothing more to offer me. I called my obgyns office and they really pissed me off, (sorry for the language, but since you can't see how angerly I am typing it's necessary, and after all, I'm sick LOL) They said they couldn't do anything for me until I had a documented fever! Seriously, I don't have time to take my temp, between chasing my 8 mo old and dealing with this breast! Luckily, I had some amoxcilin from a root canal and I am taking that. It has been almost 48hrs now, and I've only gotten about 2 oz, and Cooper's maybe had 1 or 2 at the most. I am miserable and it looks like I may have to see a surgeon and have it LANCED! I am freaking out. Not to mention Cooper is coming down w/ something, probably due to the lack of nursing, and he is only getting one side. Side note: OMGosh, I just turned around to him squealing and he has climbed in his toy box! Please tell me, when should I take my temp and get it documented! ARG!!! Please pray for us guys. I can't deal with much more. I don't know what I'lldo if it affects the future of my nursing.

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Oh my goodness. Have you tried nursing him or pumping on that side? Nursing would be better because the babies are more efficient than the pump. I only had a plugged duct once and I thought I was going to die. If you don't get any relief, go to the urgent care.

Yeah, I have nursed him on that side at least 10x, probably more, doing it right now actually. And I used my medella on the stongest setting a few times yesterday and 2-3x today. That is how I was able to finally get about 2 oz. It was over 2 different pumpings. Th ER here is a joke and the urgent care is an hour away and not much better. Honestly, I'm scared of what might happen if I let them anywhere near my nipple!

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
I was never infected but did have a bad plugged duct. My saving grace was heat. Lots of heat. Also keep pumping it often and let him nurse even if nothing comes out. Point his chin toward the plugged duct so that the force of his suck pulls the plug out. You will know immediately when it happens! It is the most painful thing I've ever been through, my hugs are coming to ya!

I agree with Melissa - I stood in the shower and let hot water beat on it while I manually pumped. Then I kept putting H on that side every hour or so. Eventually she was able to pull it free. Do you have a GP that you can go to? I can't believe that the OB won't help you :-(

Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
I'm so surprised that no one will help you out? The hot shower and hot/warm compresses worked for me too. It took about 2-3 days of heat and nursing, and tylenol for the pain...ouch. But it eventually worked. If you are not comfortable and feel that you have an infection, then I would definately go to urgent care as well. Good luck!

Ok guys, this may get a little tmi, so sorry if it does. I have used a heating pad, moist heat, bowl of water, bath shower, massaged it w/ a fine tooth comb, pricked it with a needle, and used a medicine syringe directly on the duct and created intense suction and tried to pull it out. I have a very large visible "bubble" where it is clogged. He was able to empty it some just now, but it is still engorged. It is now flowing from a few of the other ducts. I am probably going to try the pricking the bubble with a sterilized needle again this evening. I know it will be painful, but it will be such a relief when it is gone. It keeps trying to let down, but nothing can come out. I am in some really intense pain. I cringe even when my shirt brushes the nipple. My mil is coming over to help me get Cooper to bed (dh is at work) and i will take a bath when she gets her. it will be the third one today. Thanks for the support.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Oh my god - I am hung up on the needle in the duct part. OUCH. I am cringing here, but it is because you are a superhero. You are the QUEEN of nursing moms!

Can you just TELL them you have a 101 fever or something? It could magically be gone when you get to the office, you know. Happe ns with kids all the time, you know.

I know how hard you try to nurse, and I really hope this clears up for you ASAP and without too much intervention. Poor thing!!!

I am sure you have tried this but when you nurse him have him towards the plugged duct. I can not believe your doc would not give you ab's. I had one and I got ab's. He asked about a fever and I said I felt achey but had not officialy taken my temp. Leave a moist rag on it as long as you can-warm as you can take it. It sounds like you are doing everything you can. I feel for you. I had that happen and dh had the flu at the same time. It was Hell!!!

ethan's mom
Meridith, mom to Ethan born 4/23/08. Ethan was diagnosed with reflux at about 1 month. He has been on Zantac (unsuccessful) and Prevacid. He is currently taking 7.5 mg of Prevacid 2x per day, with good results. We also suspect MPI, though this hasn't been confirmed by a doctor yet.
Ethan is mostly breastfed, though we are doing one bottle of soy formula each day. We also do some homeade "solids' including, so far pears, avocado, sweet potato, and peaches.

My goodness . . . I'm with the others, lie, lie, lie, until they do something. If the lies don't work, scream and cry until they'll help. You have worked too hard to keep up breastfeeding for this to go on so long that at affects something. Sometimes a good fit does wonders, even if you feel a little crazy and self conscious afterwards. I'm sending hugs, though not real ones, as they'd probably hurt.

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
I had mastitis (sp?) in my left breast when Lauren was about 4 weeks old and I was pumping all the time. It was very painful and I ran a high fever. I remember thinking it hurt a little in the morning, then by lunch time we were driving in the car and it hurt if we hit a bump!!! I hope you get some relief soon!!!!!!

katiesmommy
Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Oh Mollybeth!! I had plugged ducts if I laid wrong or if I held Katie too much on one part of my breast and it was so painful! The only thing that would work was the Motrin they gave me for episodomy(sp?) stiches and a heating pad. Tried a hot bath with a water pick to loosen the dried milk around the nipple then ended up with sore nipples on top of it. Call the dr's and lie and say you do have a fever like everyone else said. I'll be praying for you!!

I've had plugged ducts and it is NOT fun.How unfair- The moment you get a good nights rest, this happens! I hope the pain lessens soon and I hope you don't do the needle thing.

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Oh, man....there is *nothing* like the pain of mastitis! Sweetie, put away the needle and call that dr. again. Ouch! I remember sitting in the tub with hot water running over the infected side, that helped. Massage and nurse, nurse, nurse. But I'd seriously give your dr. a call and tell him/her that you are really sick and need to be seen...they shouldn't put you off! Don't worry too much about Cooper's milk intake, because this will be over one way or another soon and he will be getting enough milk from nursing often and on the un-effected side. Your body will quickly make up for the one that's not working. This may be tmi but my right nipple is shaped differently somehow than the left, and all 3 of my kids quit nursing on that side once they figured out that the other side was easier. With Rachel, I got mastitis several times on the right side, and it was miserable! We made it past the mastitis, but she did quit nursing on that side just like the other 2 had. We continued nursing on just the left side for well over a year after that, and she did fine! *I* looked kinda lopsided, but that's beside the point. I'm sure that you'll be right as rain in a few days (the mastitis didn't cause that side to dry up for me, even after several rounds) and that Cooper will be fine. I'm sorry you're going through this!

Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
