Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Argh...she swallowed a penny!
Oh for goodness sake! Rachel swallowed a penny. I would have expected this at age 2 or 3, but at age FIVE?!? Seriously, she had just been told to get that money out of her mouth. She's been warned a thousand times before, and it's been an issue with her. Argh! I guess I'll give her dr. a call, although I've always heard that a 'watch and wait" approach is how you deal with this. Why must this child still put everything in her mouth? Does anyone here have experience with that sort of thing? My other two were really good about not putting *anything* in their mouths (maybe even to the point where it was a sensory issue...I never had to worry about that!). Rachel is the opposite. Sigh!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Hrmmm...maybe she'll poop out a quarter ;-). I have memories of going to the ER when my sister was about that same age because she'd shoved an orange seed up her nose. I kept waiting for oranges to grow, but they never did LOL!

All kidding aside, I don't think there is much you can do. Maybe give the pedi a call to put your mind at ease.

LOL...i stuck a sunflower seed up my nose when I was 2 because I thought I was a bird! We were in ER when I sneezed it out. I don't think Rachel is going to sneeze out that penny though...yeah, I guess it's just watch and wait!

I am Jacky, mommy to Joslyn Olivia (April 2008) and Katelyn Isabel (November 2009).
Joslyn was dx'ed with Silent Reflux with breath apnea at 5 days old. VERY SCARY!
Katelyn is a spitter reflux baby. Started at 3 days old as well. (Both were/are breast fed.. symptoms came on when my milk came in).
Joslyn has been reflux free since she was 12 months (suffered poor weight gain for a few months) and Katelyn is now on Zantac... waiting to see if it works.
nothing like waiting on a poopy! I like the quarter idea though!

I have experience with this situation, it happened to my oldest when he was 4. If the child can swallow ok, and no respiratory symptoms are happening, the wait and see approach is usually what happens. We had an x ray performed to check the location, and were given a few days to see if he passed it, we hadnt seen it in his bm, so the xray was repeated and it had been passed through the stool, since it was gone. If it had not been passed by the time we went back to the dr, he would have had to have had it removed endoscopically, the same goes if it is stuck in the esophagus. Pay close attention for any vomiting, coughing/trouble breathing, lack of bowel movements(this may signal an obstruction). Definately call the dr. But, usually everything is fine, and the child passes it during a bowel movement.

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
i have no clue why, but for some reason at that same age i swallowed a snap button, a penny, a dime and a nickel all the same night. i think i was trying to get out of going to school. i told my mom that my stomach was hurting and i told her what i did. i remember her sitting in my room all night with me. i don't remember the outcome but i didn't have to have x-rays or surgery so i guess it all came out okay, maybe that's why i always beep at the airport security...

This reminds me of grumpy old men. "If she poops 2 dimes and a nickel then you have a problem" was what he said to his granddaughter swallowing a quarter. I think you'll just have to check every movement. Ish! Good luck!

BTW~ I had trouble with a 4 yr old at daycare doing this so everytime I saw her put a toy in her mouth I put "ickies" (vinegar) in her mouth. She got the hint real fast. That is also what I use for a biter, swearer, etc. punishment also.

I almost liked it better when Aubrey had more sensory/oral issues. She NEVER put things in her mouth, but now...everything goes in. Hope you don't have to "wait" long.

LOL...yeah, Rachel is a handful! Just before she swallowed the penny, I had to tell her to stop licking this brick she had brought inside. When she was 2, I caught her eating earth out of the garden with a spoon! No joke. Then there was the day she opened her mouth and a beetle crawled out....and she constantly licks *everything*! The cat, people's legs, the walls, the counter at the shopping center...I know you guys have heard about her antics before but some days I just want to tie her hands to her sides and put a muzzle on her! I thought she was getting better about it (she's gotten a lot better in general about her sensory issues and activity level) but the last few days we've had some backsliding. She's not sleeping well...maybe that's what's got her off kilter? Sigh. I would sooooo prefer to not be on a first name basis with the guys at poison control! I will say this much for her...her immune system is amazing. The kid frequently doesn't catch the illnesses her siblings have, and when she does she bounces back in no time at all!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
My brother did this as a kid, so my poor mom was resigned to picking apart poo for a few days. He ended up fine!

They say that kids who eat dirt, poo, and other gross things are lacking something from their diet and crave it. I'm not sure what but could she be craving dirt? I've even read some interesting stuff on preg. women craving dirt and even paint chips. Weird~ Good thing I just craved salt:)
