Blood in Meggy's stools/Rant and rave
With the diarrhea Megan is still having her stools are looking black. Her doctor wasn't in today so I kept our appt. for Thursday and did the home testing for blood in the stools. It was positive. I am a bit worried. So many questions pop in my head. Was there an injury during endoscopy? Has she been bleeding all along and that is why she is anemic? Is it something major or a minor thing? I know it is silly. Just thought I would share with all of you and see if you have ever experienced this. Her GI did call today to say her stomach and intestines have allergy cells and she wants her back on elemental formula. How do you get a 16 month baby to take formula that taste that horrible after tasting real food? Meggy did the worst on elemental formulas so I am afraid of what will happen. We were told Milk is poison to her. So why elemental formula which still contains milk and corn two of her major intolerances. I will address my concerns with Ped on Thursday and GI in 2 weeks.

Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
There is a formula called Ross Carbohydrate Formula, i doubt it tastes much better but it is free of carbohydrates and would probably be friendlier to her belly. i was told that if the stools look black it is from blood high in the GI tract, i really hope its nothing serious. Emily has had a few instances of bloody stools and black stools but they come and go and i have never really seriously followed up with the GI about it, i kept hoping i could get it to go away without testing, but i think that time may be coming short to where it might be necessary for further testing.... I really doubt meggys blood is from the endo, i hope the GI has some good news for you. *hugs*

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Only have a second...Bassy is wild right now. Elemental formula doesn't contain milk...it is made of amino acids Bassy is severely milk allergic and does OK on it. Not sure about the corn, though. ALimentum and Nutramigen contain milk, but they are not elemental..

Hope meggy feels better soon. So sorry about the blood in the poo.

i didn't even think of that, if she did have biopsies that could be a culprit. ask if they biopsied any severely damaged areas, more abrasion from digestion may be causing it to not heal as fast.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
Elecare doesn't have milk or corn in it. I just read the label. Your GI should be able to give you a sample of the 1+ version which is vanilla flavored. It smells so good. Maybe that would help her to drink it. Otherwise you could try flavoring it with other things. I hope you get some answers soon.

Thank you everyone. Megan tried every over the counter formula there is. She did not tolerate any of them for more than a week. We had to change formulas every week to keep anything down during that first year. Elemental wise we tried neocate, elecare, peptin JR., nutrin jr. , vital jr. Not even sure what else. Spent over $1000 on all the trials for the formula only to discover she was so much worse on elemental formuals. Not sure if the doctor is just thinking it will be different now 6 months later or what. The only thing I could find is that elemental formulas contain a whole lot of corn. I have researched so much but I am sure I am missing something simple. Someone just told me formulas contain peanut products. I haven't heard this before so I will look it up. The doctor who said this told me peanuts are also in baby cereals, and so many other things. He said to google for peanut names.

Baby formula is the U.S. do not contain peanuts. That is something they are trialing in the UK, but not here in the U.S. The only baby-centric cereal-like foods that I have ever seen that contain peanuts are some toddler fruit bars marketed at Toys R US. The major brands - Gerber, Earth's Best, Beechnut, etc, etc do NOT contain peanuts and are not manufactured on equipment that processes nuts.

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
The blood from biopsies shouldn't last longer than 48 hours. Even if she had an upper scope.

As for the formulas, is there anyway you can switch to enriched Rice milk? The pharmacies sell lipids and carbs that you can add to Rice milk if you want (we don't do that with Jasmine, but trying to get her on anything elemental at 14 months was a waste of my time and money). Maybe you could introduce a formula slowly into rice milk a bit at a time? I say Rice milk because you obviously want her on something other than milk asap, and there are some brands of Rice milk that are very mild tasting, contain 3.5g of protein per serving, this might be an easier switch.

Jazz is on Rice milk (enriched) and it is very gentle on her system. I intended to get her on an elemental form. but ended up just keeping her on Rice Milk. Her GI said it was ok, provided I gave her a very balanced diet. Just an idea......

The very first ingredient in Elecare is corn syrup solids. Elyse tolerates elecare but we are still having problems with other corn products. No dairy in it though. Our gi said rice milk will do if the child eats a lot of protein...Elyse does not, so this is not an option for us. Let me know if you find a good substitute that she will drink....Elyse had another 5 oz formula day and I am at my wits end.
Check with your
doctor first!
