Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
Long time no "see"...FLARE UP questions :(
Hey guys. I have been so crazy busy and MAD about this recent AR flare with Nate. School started for Adam on Monday and soccer started last night. Dh still works out of town 4 days a week so I am pooped, LOL!!

Nate has been going thru a really rough patch the last few weeks. I know his teething really causes his AR to flare, but it started getting really bad. He is not a big cheese eater, I love it but I rarely give it to him. Well, he had it like 3 days in a row last week. It is kraft colby jack deli singles. Then he also had pizza one night (which has NEVER agreed with him but I wanted to try it again). He has been vomiting in his crib at night, EXTREMELY fussy and his poop smelled horrible (runny and mucous too!!). I am so dumb to NOT have associated this with reflux. I called the GI and she said to eliminate the cheese first (before doing meds again). I have been giving mylanta and it seems to help.

Today has been day 4 with no cheese products what so ever and things seem to be going pretty good. Can someone tolerate milk but not cheese?? I have been told yes but I can't believe that, lol. I really thought we were in the clear...I thought AR was a thing of the past. I guess it creeps up on ya. Honestly, I was just LOVING the fact of giving him anything to eat...I stopped reading all ingredients months ago. I have completely cut all cheese products, even goldfish.

I am sorry I have not even read many posts, I need to catch up with everyone. We leave for Disney on Tuesday so I am trying to "fix" Nate with all this food stuff AND pack for all of us. I miss you all.

Diagnosed A/R at 6 wks
Zantac until 1yr then Prevacid
Med free since February 08
peanut & egg allergies...still
Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
Korbin has beenMed free since Feb. However, he has had 2 flair ups that I gave him Prevacid for. He was sick both times. I gave it to him daily for 3 days and then once a day or two after that. Then he was fine. I hate that he has flair ups but it's ok to help them through them. If Mylanta works, great. I don't know about the cheese thing. It goes against what I have read too. Maybe there is something in the processing that causes him harm?

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
hey there, nice to hear from you. the cheese could be just binding him up which would cause him to get gassy & strain maybe to poop? then, causing the reflux flare? usually it is the other way around, kwim.. can tolerate cheese & yogurt but not the milk. i'm excited for you to go to disney!

I have missed you so much! It sounds like you are so busy. I understand. I'm so sorry Nate is having a flare up. I hope it is an easy fix such as removing the cheese. Not sure why he can tolerate milk. These gerdlings broke all the molds. They just keep you guessing. I thought Disney was coming up. That is so exciting. Have a great time. I hope Nate has no other problems.

How does Adam like school and soccer? I bet he is so excited to do them both. Jasmine and Dylan have open house tomorrow and can't wait for school to start. Esp. Jas cause she will be in pre-k. Her first year of school. It was so hard on me to see Dylan go. I was a wreck, so I don't know how I'll handle Jas.:P

Take care and thanks for taking the time to update.

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
A has gone med free for a mont or so and I started seeing a huge flair with these last bouts of allergic reactions. Not to mention the fall weather. I think some people can tolerate milk and not cheese. I have heard that it has somethign to do with the aging process and stuff. I hope things get better.-Amanda

Danie, i have been wondering about you! So glad you posted. I have never heard of tolerating milk but not milk products...Elyse is the opposite and I don't tolerate anything very well except yogurt. Glad though that a simple thing seems to be the "fix". Elyse does well with mozzarella and she has had chedder but does not really like it, never tried colby jack.

It helps to type this out to you all. Someone mentioned the "processed" part. Well...come to think of it, he also had hot dogs AND ham on the same days he had the cheese.

I know cheese usually binds them up, but it did opposite to Nate. This makes me think that it could have been the h dogs and ham the whle time....what do you all think? He has never tolerated those things either...I just figured it had been so long he would do fine. I am really second guessing the cheese thing right now. It's so easy to put all this stuff out of your mind. I really thought he was "cured". Thanks for your comments, I think it made me think of the REAL culprit!!

If I remember right he had that horrible reaction to ham. I bet that could be it! I hope you figure it out and he has no more issues!

you are right Amber...it was during Easter weekend. I have given him teeny tiny pieces since then, but he had a TON of it last week. UGH...glad I figured this out at least. I am going to play it safe till AFTER vacation...no cheese OR processed meats :) Guess he will live on turkey, chicken and waffles (his favorites)

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I'll bet the processed meats are the culprit (hot dogs and processed meats make me feel yucky). I guess you can give him a couple of weeks to get straightened out and then try the cheese again. Hopefully it's that - a lifetime without cheese would be very sad indeed ;-)

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I have heard of lots of people who tolerate cheese but not milk, so I don't see why it can't work the other way around, too. After all, cheese is WAY more processed than milk, right? He better be feeling better by Disney, BTW! HOpe everything improves drastically overnight!!
Check with your
doctor first!
