Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Apparently, Sebastian is now allergic to air
I just need to vent for a second...I hope you don't mind! I have been keeping my new house more spic & span than I ever thought was possible (for me, at least...I HATE CLEANING), but I guess it is just not clean enough. My husband and I vacuum and then swiffer the entire main floor (all tile, Pergo, and hardwood) EVERY morning without fail before we turn Sebastian loose. We sweep the kitchen after every meal, and I eat nothing he is allergic to (at least nothing I know he is allergic to) during the day. Well, yesterday I suppose he got a hold of a microscopic crumb or something because low and behold, he had a reaction. He had hives all around his mouth and then had diarrhea all night. His reflux is haywire today! Only one round of diarrhea this this is a super-mild reaction (as you probably already know, most reactions last at least a week with this kid), but STILL. I don't know what else I can do to keep my kid safe. It's just so frustrating. I try not to worry about it, but I don't see how I can ever send him to school. Ok. I am done. Going to go drown my sorrows in a glass of Old Geezer and watch television aimed at pre-teen girls. Thanks for listening! Hope everyone is well.

I just read your topic name while on the phone with my mom and I lol'd. I'm just glad that you keep somewhat of a sense of humor through it all. I know you're totally bummed and stressed. Hugs!

Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
You and your husband are doing such a great job taking care of Sebastian. I'm not sure I can clean my house like that EVERY DAY. I hope Sebastian will grow stronger after this.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Oh my...I cannot imagine the day to day frustration and fear you must face with Sebastian's allergies. You manage to keep such an amazing sense of humor and compassion -- kudos for that, and for being an incredible mama...

Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
We have to do the same thing with Adam (the cleaning thing, he has bad allergies) I never had to worry about little food crumbs with him, that has to be so HARD!! I hope you are watching Hannah Montana or something like that, then I won't feel so silly for watching that episode the other day, LOL!!

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
oh, man! Sorry that it's so tough...I guess that there are just going to be moments like that. Hate to say it, but a certain amount of reactions are probably going to just happen...I know with my problems with wheat, no matter what I do there are times when I get "glutened" and sometimes I can trace it to something I touched or ate...but other times who knows? I wash my hands a hundred times a day, and still end up getting wheat in my mouth sometimes. One thought...have you checked his shampoo/soap/baby wash/lotion for allergens? I know it's crazy, but i have had a hard time finding gluten free shampoos and lotions...if they don't have wheat, they have oats which are contaminated with wheat. It doesn't always cause a topical reaction, but it is so hard to keep that stuff out of your mouth! And then when we go visit my dad, who lives in a beautiful home on the top of a beautiful hill completely surrounded by *wheat fields*...well, seriously the AIR does cause problems lol. Sigh. I'm so glad that it was a milder reaction, and hopefully he's better today! I bet that the severity of his allergies and also the number of allergies will decrease over the years, and you will not have to worry as much about it as time passes. Also, he will be old enough to know what not to put in his mouth soon, and the older he gets the more he'll help you help him, if that makes sense.
Check with your
doctor first!
