Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Unpacked.......duh!
Ok. So it is almost 1 am and I am laying in bed thinking about how many calories Katie had today and I am really excited that she had 700 b/c this is a first for her. We have gone months with barely getting 20 ounces in her so I am stoked with how well she is doing on Elecare. For some reason I am seeing the side of the container with the words unpacked scoop over and over in my head. We used the RTF Alimentum in trying to avoid corn and before that we b/f so the whole scoop thing is foreign. All of a sudden it occurs to me why she has gotten back her little tummy in such a short period of time: I am packing her scoops! So I get up and put an unpacked and packed scoop in a plastic bag and there is a HUGE difference in the amount of formula. So basically if we wanted to see if there was a metabolic problem I screwed it up by almost doubling the amount of calories per ounce! Now I need a food scale to see how many grams I was giving her! Me and the Scarecrow..."If I only had a brain....."

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I pack Sebastian's scoops sometimes now...I don't kniw what to do because he is big and seem hungry all the time - yet I can't stuff him with much more than 35 ounces! My brain isn't really functioning all that well, either! Wait - so what is Katie floating in in this picture? I want one!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
We just had a conversation about this same thing over on P2P the Mom's there said they actually weigh the powder because the scoops can be way off. The scoops add too much powder they realized when they startred weigh them on a tiny food scale with a digital reout.

I had never though of that before. Apparently the side of the containers tells you how many grams each serving of powder should be.

FWIW we always used th scoop. The only time I didn't was when we were concentrating RTF up to27cals per ox. Then we used ht eRTF and then had to add tablespoons to it to bring it to a higher concentration.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
hmm, you mean you were pushing it down with your fingers or you just weren't making it "loose". i'll i've ever done is scoop it up and then brush off the top with my finger. we give coy 24 cal/oz which means to 3.5 ounces i use 2 scoops or to 5 oz i use 3 scoops. and so on...

how much of a difference is it. have you been able to weigh it yet? or measure with a spoon?

Hmmmm....now I don't know if I am actually packing it or not. I just do what Coy's mom/Kelly does. I think I will just keep doing what I am doing because it has worked thus far! So does this mean Katie doesn't have corn issues?

Sarah
mom to Mila 2-20-2007
and Robby 4-22-2004
Mila is on Peptamen JR 30 cal by NG tube. Open Heart Surgery 2/08/08. Captopril, Zantac, Losec, Lasix.
Our formula comes RTF at 30 cals / ounce. Its lovely. Is there a reason, though, that you don't WANT her gaining weight, or is it just a mommy moment? I wish M had a belly!

As an aside, bath rings are illegal here in Canada. you cannot find them ANYWHERE.

I have never packed the scoops by pushing down the powder, but I definitely don't make them loose! I press the top of the scoop on the inside of the can to level it off, so it does get a little more in there. i have never weighed it. Elyse just got switched to the vanilla Elecare which is 30 cal (but you can make the regular elecare 30 cal too, so i think it is mostly a taste thing???) which reminds me I NEVER ORDERED HER ELECARE this month. She drinks so little that we never run out which is why i forgot.

I think I have told you this before, but Elyse had issues with corn but could still have elecare. She just couldn't have corn or any other corn products. DH gave her corn kernals yesterday while I was at work (he always does that...tries new stuff while I am gone!) so we shall see how she is today. She has been tolerating other corn products just fine lately though :)

Yeah, I have been scooping it up and then pressing it against the side of the can so that it is really tight. I just weighed her on my moms scale since it does to the half pound and she gained more in two weeks on more calories than in 4 months! I went to the grocery store to see if they have a scale but the smallest weight was kg and I need g.

Sarah, its not that we don't want her gaining weight but she wasn't gaining weight on Alimentum so the switch was to see if it was the protein that she couldn't digest. It was kinda like a test to see if its the formula or the girl.

Melissa~it's just a bath seat that I got a babies r us. She needs a little support now and then and it keeps her from face planting.

i think i do it the same way the other gals are. i just scoop it up and so it is full and then brush it off on the side of the can. i think sometimes you get a little more and sometimes and little less.. kinda like probabibility.. it eventually works out to be just right.
