Mom to Matthew, 01/16/08, GERD baby, has been on Zantac since 2 mos. Aidan, his twin brother, no GERD. Max-ed out on Zantac at 1ml-3 times/day, and switched to Prevacid 15mg split tab 08/20/08. Switched again to 20mg Prilosec 09/18/08 due to Prevacid's restlessness/headache side effects. Reflux was out of control again and had to switch to 10mg Nexium 02/11/09. Good result so far.
Curcumin (Turmeric extract) & digestive health
I heard that Curcumin (Turmeric extract) helps to aid digestion, relieve pain/stomach inflamation, heartburn, stomach ulcer, liver function, etc. My mom uses it and it helps with her heartburn and increases her appetite. I'm curious to find out if it can help with GERD babies. I plan to ask the GI or ped dr at the next appts. Has anyone have experience using it, personally or for your babies? Thanks for your feedback.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I haven't heard about this, but I'm interested in learning more. My only concern is that spices can be very allergenic for babies- meaning if a baby has problem with one, he or she can have problems with all because of the cross contamination that goes on in factories. I wish Seamus' mama was still on here...she has a holistic doctor and probably has advice for you!

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
As mentioned, some babies don't respond well to spices, but there is a lot of evidence that tumeric, anise, chammomile, and many other herbs and spices assist with things that GERD sufferes struggle with. Papaya extract is another that can be very useful for these issues and is usually well liked by babies, although, as with so many things, allergies and intolerances need always to be kept in mind. In my experience, it comes down to the individual -- there are lots of things that MAY help, but different people respond differently. That's part of the idea behind homeopathy -- it isn't enough to just use a remedy, it's essential to have someone trained in homeopathy evaluate the individual to determine which remedies best suit them as an individual...

I'm concerned if turmeric is allergic to babies too and haven't tried it. I think it really helps with adults' stomach/digestion problems and has many other health benefits. I will ask my doctors and GI about it next time. Thank you for your input.
