Adoptive mommy to Micah (Feb 2006), Caleb (Mar 2007; 26 wk preemie, subglottic stenosis, BPD, GERD, dysphagia, FTT, in PT, OT, ST, feeding therapy, 30 mg Prevacid daily, mostly pureed foods, shakes & Pediasure) and Ethan (Feb 2008; 28 wk preemie, BPD, GERD, 15 mg Prevacid daily, Similac Sensitive/Alimentum)
Disappointing weight check today
Caleb had the feeding clinic today, and I was thinking his weight would be higher, because at the pedi it was 19 lbs 2 oz, at the GI doc it was 19 lbs 1 oz, but the feeding clinic scale put him at 18 lbs 12 oz. Last month he was 18 lbs 10 oz, the month before 18 lbs 9 oz. He's been throwing up more and refusing food, but dufus that I am, I thought that maybe he had gained in spite of that. I told myself not to get my hopes up on the weight from another scale, but I let myself hope anyway!

Oh well, he's got the gastric emptying study tomorrow morning. Hopefully that will tell us something. The dietician wants to wait until after that and the upper GI before trying the duocal, in case there's something else wrong. Is it wrong for me to hope they find something? I don't want anything else to be wrong with him, but I want somebody to tell me why he's not gaining weight, and how we can get him to! This is so frustrating!

On the plus side, we saw a new dietician today who was very nice and not at all concescending like the previous ones we've seen. I hate it when they act like you must be doing something wrong when you're doing everything you can!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hi there. I am so sorry to hear about the weight discrepancy...but I am hoping the scale was just off. In our ped's office, we get VERY different weights depending on which exam room we go into...sometimes Sebastian's weight is off by as much as 111 or 12 ounces! I am hoping this is what happened to you. I will be thinking of you guys tomorrow and hope that the emptying scan goes well...and I am so glad to hear you found a dietician worth a crap. Your kids are soooooooooooooo cute, BTW!

Good thing about the doctor. It sounds like you are getting good care for your lo. Condecending doctors are the WORST!
I totally know what you mean: you are sure they gained and they have lost or not gained. When my son was a newborn we had bf issues. I was at the pedi when my milk started coming in and my blouse was wet. SO the doc knew I was producing. My son was not nursing well and he'd lost weight since his birth. The doc said to give it the weekend and if he gained then no problem. We went back on Monday and he'd lost 10 oz! I was a wreck. I was so sure he'd have gained or stayed the same. The rest of the story is we decided to feed him formula for 24 hours and see how he did. Gaind 6 oz in one day! So, we weren't meant to BF.

Please keep us updated.

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Hi!! No you are not wrong to want them to find something wrong so that they can fix it. When Katie had her UGI done and the tech said nothing was wrong and I was disappointed he looked at me like I am the worst mother ever. If we can find something wrong we can fix them. And yea for nice doctors!

I feel your frustration! I have had the same scale issue though that Sebastian's mommy has. One time I took Elyse in and the nurse told me she was 5 lbs even....and she was 6 lbs 8 oz or something 2 days before (her birthweight was 3-14, at 2 mos old she was around 6-8). I told her that was wrong and she recalibrated the scale and she was actually 6-8. On the other hand, Elyse has lost 2 lbs in less than a week before when sick, and was weighed twice to make sure. GL tomorrow!

mom to Mila 2-20-2007
and Robby 4-22-2004
Mila is on Peptamen JR 30 cal by NG tube. Open Heart Surgery 2/08/08. Captopril, Zantac, Losec, Lasix.
Scales are regularly 10-20% off in either direction, so I wouldn't take that weight as accurate. I'm sorry it was such a dissappointing number though. I know that feeling very very well.

Glad about the new dietician though!

Your feelings seem totally rational to me. If we know what is wrong with our children, we know what we need to do to get them well. If we don't we feel lost and out of control. I hope that they figure out what is wrong with your little one and get him on track. We get the same thing though with the exact same scales being off as much as a pound week to week. Meggy is 15 months, 16 pounds 11 ounces, 28 and 1/2 inches tall. Her head Circumference is 43 cm. She has been deemed as a failure to thrive baby and we may end up taking her to the mayo. How is his height? Where does he stand on the growth charts? What is his activity level? Hang in there! Let us know if we can do anything. I know sometimes it feels like u r alone in what is going on. Just try to breath and make it day to day. We have had doctors go so far as to say we must be feeding her wrong or that she has a behavior problem. They ask us even if we are restricting her diet. She is just so thin all of her bones stick out. We try to feed her anything and everything. Her body just cannot handle as much food as most kids. She is in pain a lot too. Don't know if you son has any visible pain or not. For some reason the more she eats the more she seems to hurt. Engi Engin117@gmail.com
