sleep question
i have noticed more often then not audrey will suddenly wake up gasping. She will take in a really deep breath fast a couple times in a row before releasing it, she will squirm around and kick a bit. she wakes up what seems like fully, then is sometimes able to fall back asleep on her own or i give her a paci and she falls asleep. Is this what apnea is? is this a normal baby thing or not?

It's only apnea if she stops breathing for 20+ seconds. I have been told it is normal for preemie newborns to "forget to breathe" like that....doesn't make us moms feel any better about though, does it? Audrey is a 35 weeker, right?

normal!? weird! but yeah thats what it seems like, she forgets to breath and yeah they said that she is between a 34 and 35 weeker. She is just now starting to look like a baby lol her head dosen't look nearly as big compared to her body, her ears have unfolded b/c the cartilage grew in them, her nipples look normal now and her genitals are not nearly as puffy. when she came out i almost thought she was a boy! lol it's so weird what 5 or 6 weeks matters.

Omigosh, i had forgotten all that! Elyse had baggy skin all over, and of course the white hair covering her body....no ear cartilage, her ears were always folded over and stuck to the side of her face. She also had NO eyelashes and her eyes were solid black...no color in the iris. Her head was smaller than DH's fist and bigger than mine...so right in between.

Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Keira was evacuated (LOL) at 41 weeks but she had episodes like that for a good while after she was born. It use to freak me out but she always went back to sleep on her own. Her doctor said so long as it's a 20 minute pause only then not to worry.

Sounds like she might be forgetting to breathe. Cooper would just stop breathing, or he wasn't breathing well enough to fill his lungs and oxygenate his body. He had apneas and hyponeas

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Having just been through the whole sleep study thing...what I learned was that central apnea (which is common among preemies) is a neurological thing and when the episodes occur, there is no effort to breath. Obstructive apnea, on the other hand, leaves the baby's body trying to breath, but nothing (or very little) is moving through the airway. While the 20 second rule is applied for diagnostic purposes, with obstructive apnea, they do count shorter episodes as apnea if the child is trying to breath, but is unable to do so. Some kids have mixed apnea, which is a mixture of both types occurring.

I would definitely bring it to the attention of her doctors, ask about a sleep study, and frankly, if you don't have an apnea monitor, i'd consider getting one, for peace of mind if nothing else....(I plan to!)

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
coy was a 36wkr. he did that for several months. it was so bad i took him to the ICU @ 4 wks. they found nothing-said it was just a normal preemie thing that he would grow out of ; and he did. however... i'd still bring it up to your doc just for peace of mind.

coyle looked like robert redford when he was born. {Deleted at Mom's request. . . That was the "uncropped" picture which was just a bit too revealing. Mom will post the right one in another posting.]
