CArafate question
Atalia was just prescribed Carafate because she is having some rough days. The MD said 1 hr after meals and at least 1 hr away from prevacid, but the pharmacist instructions say 1 hr before meals or 2-3 hours after a meal (on an empty stomach) How do you give it? Thanks a bunch!!!

I followed the advice another mom on here gave to me (after i TRIED to give it as close to an hour before meals as possible) she told me she was told carafate could given 20-30 mins before meals, and that worked much better for us. The GI did tell me to give it 2 hours before a prevacid dose or 2 hours after prevacid though. i hope Atalia feels better with carafate.

Man, carafate is a hard one to time with a newborn since they eat so often! We did prevacid 30 mins before 1st feed, then carafate 30 minutes before the next feed, and so on (I think 4 hours between doses of carafate) and fit in that last prevacid dose somewhere. She was on 4 doses daily of carafate but we often got in only 3 because of the timing issues with prevacid and feedings

Thank you sooo much you guys- you don't know how much I appreciate all your help. She is also on 4 doses of it, and I was about to try to give it to her sleeping hoping she would remain asleep after I gave it to her, trying to give it one hour before a meal. Just wandering- did the carafate help? I'm praying and trusting it helps my little one- may God Bless you all.

we were also lucky if we got in 3 does cause emily was on prevacid and m.o.m. at the time too. i tried to give it to emily sleeping but it never worked, she would spit it out in her sleep or wake up chocking, i was never very good at it. i hope you have better luck if you try! honestly, the meds didn't seem to work at all the first week, i kept with it and the next week was MUCH better. probably the best few weeks we had was while she was on carafate. i just figured emily had a lot of damage in there that's why it took so long to work, i really hope that it dosen't take that long to help atalia!

Thanks emibug! I have already gone in to see her three times- she wakes up with the acid reflux, squirms soo much, I have to keep putting the paci into her or pick her up and soother her... very restless "sleep" and at times just wont sleep at all. Your little one is beautiful! Amalia is also taking her anp so this is why I have a little time to post- but Amalia is due to wake up any minute now. And there goes Atalia again..gotta go. God bless.

ack, unfortunately for us, it made no difference for Elyse. She was put on it after she started spitting up trace (and I mean TRACE) amounts of blood. She was on it, I don't know, maybe a month. It was SO hard to time, and I htink I did it in her sleep when I could. BUT everyone here was shocked that it didn't work bc for their los it made a huge difference. My theory is that Elyse simply does not like to eat/drink, so it never mattered what meds she was on or what changes we made....she was a constant puker so that probably made her dislike eating in general. I hope it helps Atalia!

Kelly, mom of two boys with GERD. John (born 11/03) was on 40mg Nexium til 15 mos old. Second son Brian (born 05/07) started on Zantac. Now on 22.5 mg Prevacid Solutabs plus Carafate 0.5 ml 1 x day
We did Prevacid 1/2 hour b4 1st feeding, Carafate 1/2 hour b4 2nd feeding, Carafate 1/2 hour b4 3rd and Prevacid 1/2 hour b4 4th. Then we did Carafate 15 min b4 middle of night feeding. Carafate was like a miracle drug for Brian. It was evident after about 2 days on it. He ended up being on it for several months although we gradually reduced the number of doses per day. So sorry you are dealing with reflux again. Personally I didn't find it any easier the 2nd time around because it's tougher when you also have another child to care for. But you are strong and you will get through these tough months!! I will be thinking of you and praying the Carafate helps.

Mom (Laura) of 2 girls both with reflux: oldest, Larysa, born 11/14/03 has tons of allergy problems and reflux; youngest, Lauren, born 11/10/06 has Colic/Reflux since 2 1/2 weeks. Tried Zantac, Levsin and Mylanta all were no help. Was adding cereal to formula with every feeding. Tried Soy, Nutramigen and LactoFree formulas those were no help either. Currently on 30 mg of Prevacid / day and Carafate (as needed) 2 ml 4x/day. She is on regluar cow's whole milk and table foods. Picture: Taken 8-24-08.
Dr. Kaiser had us do the Carafate immediately after feeding so that the Carafate wouldn't 'get washed away so to speak'. I just made sure to give the Prevacid a good 30 to 45 minutes before feeding and then by the time the feeding was done we gave the Carafate. That seemed to work for Lauren. Everyone seems to have different opinions on when exactly to give. I would try and stick to what MD says but also feel it out and see what you see shows the best results. I love your picture. What beautiful girls!
