I'm trying...
not to drive y'all crazy, but I just want to share my frustrations for the day. This will be the short version...I need a blog, lol.

I had a floater in my class with me today. She basically moves from room to room giving people breaks. For now she's my co-teacher. She's great, but it's just the fact that I know she's temporary. Any way, we had 32 kids in our room today. The room we're in is about 15x30 (just guessing). The room is full of cabinets and cubbies and tables. There's hardly any open space. I moved a few things today even though the dir. told me not to. Throughout the day, I had quite a few "words" with the dir. and asst. dir. about the fact that this is not what I signed up for. I told them that it's not fair to the kids to have that many of them in there. Their answer is to split the class up as much as possible throughout the day. We didn't even have enough chairs for all of them to sit down and eat snack. The dir said we could eat snack as two groups. We're supposed to sit half down for snack while the other half stands there and licks their chops I guess.

I told both of them that I'm sick of having one of them tell me to do one thing and then the other comes behind her and tells me to do something else. I told them they need to put my instructions in writing so I don't have to get mixed messages all the time :)

Yes, y'all--I told the asst. that I'm not a trouble maker but I will not sit back and be taken advantage of. I had tables stacked on top of each other with chairs on top of the tables just to have room for them to sleep. Four kids peed their pants during nap bc the bathroom doors were blocked with other kids sleeping---and that's not by choice. It was either that, or block the fire exit.

Other teachers passed me throughout the day and said "this is not cool. I'm praying for you!"

Y'all remember me telling you how ideal this whole thing sounded in my interview and I knew in my heart that no daycare could be run that perfectly. I just wanted to believe it's true so badly.

On the bright side...Maggie is doing great! I know that somehow I will make it work. It's just not right that they threw it on me like that and that I am all of a sudden the "lead teacher". This is ugly so be warned but my new motto is: I'm not a trouble maker, but I aint no $#!+ taker! Kwim? I will not start something but I be danged if I'm gonna let them do stuff like that to me without at least getting my 2 cents in. I did also decide that I will do what is best for my kids and if she wants to fuss about me breaking some stupid guideline, then so be it. Let her fuss. I highly doubt she'll fire me since she's down on help :)

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
32 kids????????????? Holy crap. I don't care if you're in a gymnasium, that's too many for just 2 people. What are the laws in your state???? In Indiana it's 6 kids to 1 adult if the kids are under 5. Lauren's in-home daycare is 6 to 1 exactly and I really don't know how she does it sometimes...32!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't want my child to be one of 32, no matter how fabulous the teacher is - no offense. Even in my classroom I can't have more than 28 fourth graders.

What are the state guidelines for a size that large at their age?? In our stae 2yrs old are 6 kids one adult. 3yrs olds are 10kids one adult and 4 year olds are 15 to one adult. K-5 is 20 to one adult.

Those numbers are withour Tax Exempt status. Without that they limit is lower. Not sure why when you are a private tax exempt palce you can have more, but so be it.

I imagine you are WAY over the limit. If the firestation does a spot check they will be in trouble....:( And yes the firestation close to my old school did frequent spot checks.

What are the parents saying??? I imagine they are NOT too happy either.

I've been researching the state guidelines, lol. For in home centers, it's low but for daycares it's 1:18 so we're ok there as far as the state is concerned.

You better believe that I am making sure the parents know how many kids are in there. I stressed to one parent today that MY CLASS NOW HAS 32 KIDS, THESE ARE NOT KIDS FROM ANOTHER CLASS! When I send home a welcome letter next week, I am going to include a section about special snacks. I'm gonna purposely include "if you send a special snack for your child's bday, please be sure to send at least 32 so everyone gets one" YOUR'S TRULY MRS. MELISSA lol

I told my fellow teachers that my prayer is that the parents will just get po'd and pull out the kids and maybe she'll get the picture. Problem is that most of the parents don't see it. When they get there and when they leave, most of the kids aren't there!!! That's why I'm putting it in writing for them!

Just a funny side note: the parents are CLUELESS! They came in asking-Does he have any artwork to take home today? I just wanted to say-do you have any idea what I've been through today and you're asking me about ARTWORK? Y'all be nice to your kids' teachers..... :)

Thing is...I love the kids and their parents. I truly do. It's my mgmt. I'm having issues with. I feel sorry for the kids...like Jen said...no matter how good the teacher is, that's ridiculous.

You are soo right. I had pretty GREAT control over my class but to be honest the year I taught 26 it was very hard. Even with an aide full time and lots of experience on my side. It was rough.

I could NOT meet with parents a the drop of a hat to discuss their child's good and bad academic points. With a class that size you have to go over the grades and papers before having meetings like that. It was hard.

I hope you can make head way with Mgt. That will only make the year even longer. HUGS

Yep, I told the dir in one of our many conversations that I don't like having days when I've hardly even spoken to my kids individually.

One little girl is new to the whole childcare world. She cries off and on throughout the day but very quietly. I'd just go by and give her a kiss on the head and say "I love you,it will get better". I felt sincerely bad for the kids...I mean some of them were completely unaffected, but some of them were affected a lot.

OMG - how are you doing that day after day? I can't believe that they have so many kids crammed into a class. If something happens to one of them, the center is going to be up a creek. I'm really shocked that your state guidelines allow so many kids - how old are they?

What art project will you be doing tomorrow hee!hee!

Today my little sardines will be learning to swim upstream against the current.

Just remember Donnessa, this is SC. We don't expect our kids to learn...just survive.

Ava 5/3/05 asthma, food allergies

That's so not cool. You are handling it better than I would. I am just thinking about last year... Melina's kindergarten class had 19. There was usually me, the teacher and one or two other moms. It still took all of us to be able and do anything "extra" with the kids. We needed all those hands to get things done in a calm and orderly fashion. (At least as orderly as kindergarteners can be). I am SHOCKED at 32 kids for two teachers. Holy crap. That seems like WAY too many kids. I am praying for you girly!!!

Thanks Jen. It's funny. I'm sitting here trying to remember my role by memory...I'm stuck at 24 out of 28. Four won't be there during the day any more. My twin girls left and two others will only be there late.
