Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Back from the ENT - WWYD?
Halley had her ENT appointment today. The doctor was very nice (and ON TIME!). He recommended that she get tubes and he also recommended that we consider getting her adenoids out as well. My dh is not very keen on the adenoidectomy, because it is a longer procedure that requires deeper anesthesia (and he is a very fearful person by nature). I would like her to have it because I really think it will help her sinus infections. The doctor said we can do it now, or do it later if she needs a second set of tubes. What would you do? Her surgery is September 4.

Personally-from experience, I would do the adnoids now. It is a bit longer recovery, but under ordinary circumstances (don't use my extra sensitive Aubrey as an example) not that much more. My son was normal by the next day. I should have had his done w/ the first set of tubes w/ my son. He slept SOOOOO much better after having the adnoids out. Email me if you have any other questions or want to talk. Glad to hear you liked the doc tho.

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
I have no personal experience with this so I would be going on the basis that I have only heard/read that they do much better if tubes and adenoids removed.

Julie - I have three children. My youngest Katie is my refluxer. My first Ben was very colicy and is ADHD. My middle Jakob is pretty easy going. Katie had it bad as a baby no sleep for two years. She was on Nutramagin, Prevacid and Zantac. Thought we were through it but after age three it came back big time. After her scope she was put on Prevacid 45mg a day and mylanta as needed. Scope was in Sept. Showed damage in stomach and espophogus. It took about 7 months of medication and Reflux diet for her to start feeling better.
Oh my goodness. For sure listen to the ENT. The enlarged adenoids are most likely what is causing the sinus infections. They become the breeding ground. You won't believe the difference it makes. All three of my kids had tubes and adenoids.

Honestly, even to do the adenoids is still a quick procedure. My ENT would tell me that they are safer in the operating room than in the ride to the hospital.

Mary & Nicholas 7-17-03 (non-refluxer)allergies, asthma on Singulair and Flovent & Aidan 1-28-07(my refluxer)Nissen Fundoplication on June 20, 2008, FTT, MSPI, DGE, ear tubes, allergies and severe GERD now currently taking just Prevacid and drinking Elecare Vanilla 1+.
I would absolutely take the adenoids out too. I wanted to have Aidan's taken out when we put tubes in but the stupid ENT we went to said she doesn't like to do it in a hcild under the age of 2. So we waited and most likely they are still going to have to come out since they are still enlarged and causing him to snore like a trucker. They blamed all that on the reflux and wanted to wait until it was under control to make a decision. I wouldn't hesitate to do it. I have heard nothing but good things about removing them when they are enlarged.

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
I am so glad to hear that she'll be getting tubes soon. I don't know anything about anything with the adeniods, but if the ENT is recommending it I'd say go with it! Imagine your life without ear and sinus infections!! BLISS!

Mom to Jasmine aka: Jazz 01/24/2007
Dx with silent reflux at 8 months
FPIES, DGE, MSPI. Recently diagnosed with EC (Eosin. colitis and now Primary immune deficiency disease.
Also mom to Nathan. born Jan.20th, 2009, MPI . so far dx with reflux and has an extremely sensitibe GI system. Also dx with primary immune deficiency disease.
I don't have much to add, except that one ENT said to remove Jazzy's adnoids and one gave us Nasonex spray for a month. We opted for the medication before surgery and now her adnoids are back to normal size, and not causing any trouble at all. She still may have to get them removed in the future if they flare up again and again, but I'm hoping not. It's a tough decision, but you gotta go with your gut.

Our ENT said he likes to wait until closer to 2 (hence my ds not having them out until 2yr 3mo old). For him to suggest having them out sooner means they are causing a problem. I did not hesitate to have Aubrey's removed at 11mo old. The surgery took an extra 10min or so but it wasn't bad at all.

mom2adriane&morgan
Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
Morgan had hers out last year with her 4th set of tubes. I believe that if he had them out sooner we would have had less sinus infections and ear infections since everything eventually backs into the ears. Perhaps we could have had less tubes if we had done the adenoids earlier. They are already looking at A's adenoids even w/o tubes. She snores horribly. It took maybe 10 minutes more and she did great. I think a younger child would do even better. Good luck with your decision. -Amanda
