Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Advice and a kick in the pants maybe??
Ok, so back on July 17th we took Katie off of oatmeal and on the 23rd we took her off of all solids b/c she would just reflux them back up all day. We have her scope coming up and don't want it to be artificially clear b/c she is only having Alimentum/Elecare so yesterday we started her back on pears. We have had 2 weeks of no reflux and in general a really happy baby. Today, she is refluxing again. I had hoped that a month of nothing buy liquid would help her esophagus heal if it was inflamed. FIL passed away from years of non-irritating reflux that turned into esophageal cancer and dh takes Prilosec every day for the last 5 years; will she grow out of it?? Everyone keeps telling me she will but I have a little voice in my head telling me she won't, kwim?
Could she just be intollerant to food?? I was sooo hesitant to put her back on solids since she was feeling better being off of them but since she is 10 mos. and not gaining weight everyone including drs. want her back on them. Am I jumping the gun with being worried since it is only day 2 and she just needs to adjust?? Dh tells me to give it to God and while I know I should I have always had a hard time letting God handle things while still taking charge. If I hadn't demanded the GI consult we would still be in the pedi's office twice a month with him just upping her meds without examing her. Advice, religious or otherwise?? I can handle it if you yell at me if I need it! :)

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
|No kicking coming from this corner. You're just going with mommy instinct - there's no blame. All you're trying to do is make sure she feels well - is there harm in that? Advice from here - maybe just a tbsp full of solids for a few more days at any time that she seems the best, just to see what happens. |
My DH is on daily prilosec as well, and has has the non-erosive GERD (I think it's NERD?) for over 15 years. I have no such issues. Thus, it's up to God to see if my dd will outgrow this. I'd say to try to stay positive and know that you're doing all you can to get her help. Letting God take charge is one thing, letting your child suffer because you're waiting on His reply is another.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
|Okay, here is the advice I was given by a mom whose son puked for 15 months back in the 70s... bread & crackers. i was seriously terrified to intro bread/crackers because of coy's issues with milk & soy but i tell you what IT WORKED! he has had no reactions to milk/soy in any baked goods that i have added to his diet. also, the only time his reflux is really bad (it used to be really bad ALL day & sometimes @ night) is in the mornings when he does not have 'solid' food in his tummy. i also suggest serving the solids @ a different time then you are serving formula-if you are not already. have you tried crackers? i know all kids are different but you've read my posts and know how terrible coy's reflux has been (and still is sometimes) but i am truly seeing a difference with all the bread & crackers i'm pumping him with.
i think it was wise to try again. i did yogurt @ 7 mo and waited four mo. to try again... and it worked! i've even served him GET THIS butter & cheese!! and no vomit! no bad reflux!
coy seemed to have the most trouble with the purees and the cereals for some reason. he would reflux those back up ALL the time. they seemed to really irritate his tummy for some reason. then for awhile he even puked whole pieces of fruits up. esp. if i served it right after a bottle. now the only fruit that has come back up has been a mandarin orange.
sorry, queeen of babble here..

Sharon, Mom to Elyse, 17 mos (15 mos adjusted-preemie). Zantac/Elecare. History of: Respiratory Distress Syndrome with ventilation/CPAP/cannula, tpn, n/g tube, PDA, jaundice, apnea, bradycardia/tachycardia, severe anemia, blood transfusion, reflux, Sandifer's Syndrome, intestinal malrotation, hemangiomas, MSPI, feeding issues. ICU inpatient 53 days! 2 surgeries, 2 UGIs, barium enema, pH probe, endoscopy. Developmentally on target now! PIC: Yobaby Beard
|We had to do solids and formula at LEAST an hour apart too. It seemed to help Elyse to have solids first, then a bottle an hour later so it had something to land on. Also, Elyse's multiple-daily puking and spitting up pretty much turned off overnight, with rare occurrences after that. I think it was around 12 mos. I was convinced we would never get out of that too, but we did. Now she rarely pukes or spits up. I would have been able to tell you yesterday that it had been about 3 weeks, but she spit up again today :( |
I finally got over the slow/no weight gain bc everyone tells me she looks fine now (everyone that matters,lol....just don't pay attn to the rest!) and her drs started saying that her growth trend is fine. She went from below the charts to 3rd percent to 10th and on up and I think she is between 25 and 50 now for weight??? if I remember correctly, but that was almost 3 mos ago so who knows.
I guess I am trying to tell you to relax, bc I didn't and it didn't do me or Elyse any good. We just had to forge our way thru the piles of puke, none of her meds worked to stop the reflux, and no one wanted to babysit, etc etc but it does get better! PROMISE!!

Adriane Reese 05/16/07; seemingly healthy when born; diagnosed with MSPI, severe Reflux, Apnea, Ashtma, Epilepsy, and severe food allergies(rice, corn, milk, soy, eggs, oats, wheat, beef, chicken, squash, pumpkin, avocado, etc.);On apnea monitor, seems to be tolerating RCF w/carbohydrate mixed in; on Zyrtec, Xopenex, Prevacid
|You are doing what you feel is best for your child. No one here is going to fault you for that. We have all been there at one time or another. I will agree with the pp about the purees vs. solids. We finally turned a corner. I never thought we would do it but it finally happened. I will tell you not to worry but the mom's that have tt me for the past 6 months know that we all worry. They are our babies that is what we do. Perhaps try some of the advice above and see how things go. |
When we got Adriane's scope done we had a similar situation where she wasn't eating much. Especially for someone who was over a year old. She was barely taking purees let alone anything else. Mainly formula. You will do what you think is right and keep her safe. Have faith. -Amanda
