Adoptive mommy to Micah (Feb 2006), Caleb (Mar 2007; 26 wk preemie, subglottic stenosis, BPD, GERD, dysphagia, FTT, in PT, OT, ST, feeding therapy, 30 mg Prevacid daily, mostly pureed foods, shakes & Pediasure) and Ethan (Feb 2008; 28 wk preemie, BPD, GERD, 15 mg Prevacid daily, Similac Sensitive/Alimentum)
Disagree w/ped re formula for Ethan
Ethan had a 6 month (3 months adjusted) well-child on Thursday, and I asked the ped about trying a different formula because he's been all but impossible to feed lately. He said we could try Nutramigen and gave us a couple of sample cans. Ethan refuses the Nutramigen, even when I tried mixing it with the Enfacare he was on before. So I thought I'd try Similac Sensitive, which I know is not the same, but he drinks it like crazy! He's finishing 6 oz bottles when for the past few weeks we've had to fight to get 2-3 oz in him! So I called and talked to the nurse, and she talked to the ped and called me back. The ped says we can use the Sensitive for a couple of days, but we should start adding Nutramigen to it and ease him over to it. The ped thinks that he has a milk allergy, and wants him on the Nutramigen or back on the Enfacare (which he also won't drink well). The Sensitive is lactose free, but milk-based. I don't know what he's basing his milk allergy theory on. He didn't even look at the records of his feedings that I've been keeping, nor did he do any other tests. I think if he's drinking the Sensitive we should keep him on it! Has anyone had this problem?

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
If he does well on the Sensitive, I would leave him on it! You'll save yourself a bundle. If he ends up not doing well, you may want to consider trying Alimentum (if you haven't already) rather than Nutramigen. My dd HATED, HATED, HATED Alimentum but loved Nutramigen. Other kids are the complete opposite. They are similar to each other, so it may be worth a shot. Another possibility if you put him back on Nutramigen is trying the ready to feed if you're using powder or vice versa. Some kiddos have a preference. Good luck with the Sensitive!

Tracey, mom to Katie. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on Zantac. At 8 months old she was removed from Zantac as it was giving her migraines, currently on Prevacid. Switched to Elecare since she is not gaining weight; trialing solids after being off for a month. Geneticist said reason she isn't gaining weight is she is stubborn. Upcoming appts.: Neurologist for developmental delay and EGD scheduled for September. She is one funny baby!
Our GI said that Nutramigen tastes bad and that they pretty much have to start out on it to drink it. Did he say why he thinks it's a milk allergy? Weird.

Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Keira went from Alimentum to Nutram and she seemed to prefer the Nutram over the Alimentum. Just recently we switched her to Similac Sensitive and she seems to LOVE that. It sure smells better! haha. If he's doing ok on it I don't understand why they would want to go back to a hypoallergenic formula. Did they say why they felt he has a milk allergy? Are there any signs you notice?

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Honestly, if he is not exhibiting any symptoms of a milk allergy, then I think you should leave him on whatever formula he will drink and doesn't react to! Do YOU think he has an allergy? Sebastian's milk allergy is extremely severe, so there was never a doubt (even before tests), but I still think you'd be able to tell. I swear, if I had listened to my ped on everything, who the heck knows where we'd be now.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Seems odd they are diagnosing him with a milk allergy with no conclusive tests.. he's not had blood in teh stool or extreme diarrhea or vomiting-am i right? if he is drinking the senstive with none of these issues then i'd assume he can tolerate it. one scoop of good start and my kid puked for hours.. same with soy.. so glad to hear he is eating.
