puffy eyes not a rash all over
I wrote earlier about my sons puffy eyes (he is 9) after swiiming in the lake. Now after a couple days he has rashes on his body. This really looks like some kind of allergic reaction to me. Now I am trying to figure out what it could be. Could it be something in the lake? Or should I be thinking what has he eaten differently. Here is my question: Is an allergic reaction immediate? Or should I be analyzing what he has eaten or done differently over a longer period of time.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Hi there. So sorry about the rash and puffy eyes! Ugh! The allergic reaction could or could not be immediate. If it is a type 1 allergy - the kind that shows up on a RAST or skin prick test - yes, it would be immediate (within two minutes to two hours). If it were a Type 4 allergy, it would show up up to three weeks later...however, most kids with this type of allergy (Sebastian has this) present symptoms within three to four days. Also, there would MOST LIKELY (but not always) be symptoms other than rashes/puffy eyes for this type of reaction. Could it be something - like a lotion or perfume - that he was exposed to today? Sebastian gets rashes also from our baby wipes (the sensitive, unscented kind, no less) if I rub too much (like after he poops) and don't coat him in Aquaphor immediately after. The rash could also be from laundry detergent that didn't wash out completely...I'd say that if there are no digestive or respiratory issues along witht he rash, it is probably not food related...I hope this helps a bit!!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
What kind of rash is it? (hives, raised and pimply, eczema like...?) Does he have a fever and where on his body are they? From my experience, if it was something he ate, as long as it's not an anaphylactic allergiy, it can take a little while to pop up. Contact allergy is usually more immediate.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
i'm thirding the above information. allergies are so, so complicated. i'm betting it was the lake water and he's having a delayed reaction. i've been told my son has no milk allergy by two allergists even tho. he pukes violenly and has diarrhea for days. my husband has horrible, horrible rashes from his allergies and the best med is corticosone (spelling) 10 or plain 1% hydrocortisone.

also, if he does have a fever than many viruses can cause rashes.

It is more of a pimply rash and he has no fever. I will pop him by the doc tomorrow to see what she says. I hope it is just something in the lake that gave him the break out. Thanks soooo much for your insight. I wish I would have found this site years ago. He has been taking some herbal supplements from a holistic doctor for a few weeks. They said an allergic reaction from that would have happened sooner.

Could it be a parasite? Here in MN we have chiggers towards the end of summer they hatch.

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Katie and dh get a pimply like rash that is eczema. Not saying that is what your son has but it sounds like it. Dh's got bad a few years ago after he reacted to a chemical that my dad added to their pool.

I was thinking parasite or some sort of bug bite. Doesn't sound pretty! I imagine you just treat the rash? We'll see what the doc says. Hopefully they will know right away what it is. Thanks
