Poor appetite
Hi...new here. My daughter is now 18 weeks corrected age (6 months actual age) and suffers with GER. Currently on Prilosec 2.5 ml daily. Weighs only 11 pounds 7 ounces today. I'm writing because I want to know if anyone out there has a child whose appetite is fairly poor and if so, what has been your experience in dealing with that. She currently is fed EBM enriched with 3 tsp Happy Baby brown rice cereal and 0.6 ml vegetable oil/4 oz bottle. She consumes no more than 21 ounces per day and has done so for the last 3 months. She spits up/vomits a moderate to large amount at each feeding. Some worse than others. She sees only her pediatrician, who in my opinion, is not aggressive enough. It seems as though she is developing a food aversion through learned behavior secondary to painful eating/vomiting. I would like to intervene before this problem gets worse. Has anyone sought help from a Feeding Specialist? Speech Therapist? Any input would be incredibly helpful! Thank you very much.

If you are not happy with your pediatrician I would get with a pediatric GI as soon as posssible. I think a lot of peds can go only so far with this stuff.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
HI and welcome. Was she six weeks early then? How much did she weigh @ birth? For her adjusted age she is on the 3rd percentile. Was she always?

At her weight she needs about 550 cal/day or about 22-28 ounces. Sounds like the rice cereal could be filling her up too much. There is controversy with adding anything to bottles-my personal opinion is that rice cereal made my son's reflux worse and decreased his appetite as well. The vegetable oil could be adding to that too. Does she wake to eat @ night?

Does she squirm @ the bottle or arch during feedings? What vegetable oil are you using? She could be having a reaction to that as well. In addition, many kiddos can not even tolerate rice cereal @ that young of age. Is the thickening for aspirations? Have you tried simply thick instead?

Gabi was 10 weeks early. NICU stay for first 9 weeks, pretty uneventful actually. We've had her on Neosure prior to cereal but I believe she developed a milk sensitivity (rash, flatus, irritable). When we returned to straight breastmilk she ate less than a desirable amount. The cereal not only mildly thickens the milk but offers additional calories. As does the vegetable oil. Otherwise, she'd never meet her daily goals. I could give or take any of them; I just want her to reach the 550 calories she requires. What is simply thick? Also, I need to find a good Peds GI in my area rather than calling around blindly. In the Milwaukee area.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Hi and welcome! My dd's 10 months and will only consume 18-20 oz formula a day, though she's eating solids and making up for at least most of the calories. I have a few connections in the Milwaukee/Waukesha area, so I'll contact them and see if they have any recommendations. I do know a decent GE in IL, but it would be about a 2 hour drive for you.

Is she on any meds yet? Some of the meds can cause a decrease in appetite. As for rice cereal, we skipped that and went to oatmeal, though for other issues. Some of these kids have a hard time with rice as well. Have you tried different bottles? Maloxx or mylanta? Feeding her at a high angle and keeping her upright for at least 30 min after eating?

The vomit can definitely be a way of life even after the reflux gets under control, though it's more of just a laundry problem then. Does the vomit just after eating or does it take a while? If she can vomit on command (like my dd seemed to be able to ;-) it could be related to delayed gastric emptying or DGE.

BTW, Simply Thick and ThickIt are both just thickeners that do not add any calories to the food, though it may be easier for the little one to digest than the rice.

Sorry this is so long - just wanted to give you a welcome and some things to ask your ped about!!!

She is on Prilosec 2.5 ml once daily. Her brown rice cereal has probiotics in them. The decline in her appetite started BEFORE the meds were added. I actually think the meds do help. She squirms and arches her back OCCASIONALLY during feedings. Her vomit/spit up may occur from the time she eats all the way until her next feeding. I do think she has DGE but am reluctant to talk to the MD about Reglan (metaclopramide) since there are a million SE. That's interesting that your daughter is on Magnesium. Was this addition made by your GE or PED? Do you think it helps? Is your daughter still spitting up and is she now gaining weight?

Mine was 4 weeks early. Had an eventful stay so I'm glad yours did not. My SIL is a NICU nurse in Wausau.. i could ask her for some suggestions. We too had ours on Neosure which i believe started Coy's MSPI as well. I never thought about oil for additonal calories. MY LO was 4.5 @ birth and is now only 15.5 @ 11 mo (10 adjusted). He vomits all day/every day too. Was a bottle fighter @ that age too. Now drinks bottles fine but refuses most solids. i'd agree with your assesment that it could be an aversion. have you tried dream feeds?

There are some other drugs for DGE that some other moms on here have used with success. Hopefully they will pop on.

dream feeds
Mom2coy: I've not dreamfed yet. But I suspect she'll wake and cry. When did your LO stop fighting the bottle?

about 2 mo. ago or so. i was quite bad @ 2 mo. got better @ 4 mo. then was horrible from 5-8 mo because of teething. he has eight. he's on zantac now but the reflux is not really controlled as of yet. he's always drank the bottle better @ nighttime. i've heard both good and bad with dreamfeeds. i never had to wake mine tho-just woke on his own.
