newbie... dr update
Thank you for all the kind words yesturday when I first posted I will say it was a HUGE relief to read of other moms like me that are struggeling with this. I took Riley into her ped dr yesturday, im not a fan of her and we've only ever seen her 2...but I took her b/c her GI dr was doing procedures at the hospital and unabvle to be reached , altho I am not a fan of her ped dr (have to switch her soon) I thought it shouldnt be so bad right?... well basically she said Riley was very constipated, and when we got to talking about her reflux the ped dr goes "EVERY baby spits up, half the time it's you mothers over reacting about it.. now that your child has come through the magical doors of this hospital maybe she'll magically be better this wknd".... as if Rileys reflux is all me being over dramatic. I didnt know wether to laugh or cry... b/c as shes telling me this in a catty tone I was wiping vomit that was dripping from my black t-shirt and changing Riley out of her 2'nd outfit in an hour!!... I explanied to her that I only brought her in b/c Riley was acting weird and was screaming in pain for two hours straight and arching her back, not to discuss what her GI dr has already diagnosed her with.... and she said that its "normal" and that Ive just been lucky to ahve a child that never cried like that before.... When my husband got home from work I was just in tears I told him Im switching her ped dr asap. It was such a waste of time, the only good that came out of it was that I learned that Riley had gained a few ounces (could ahve been lack of any bowl diapers tho too) but I had to look on the bright side of something since my hormones were getting the best of me yesturday..... =( And the GI dr called over and said that he wanted to pursue a possible PH probe test if she doesnt gain weight like he would like her to... Im not sure what that entails though...I was so out of it yesturday with lack of sleep that sitting in the peds office any longer wasnt going to happen. So I have some questions I thought I would ask since you all seem to know your stuff and Im just learning all of this... .....What exactly is a PH probe test? ....Does anyone else notice when their baby smiles they spit up more? or act like they may laugh? .....and riley seems to realy notice now when we are and arent home already like when I lay her down to sleep at church she tends to get very anxious and when she eats out in public she much more frantic and vomits more vs being at home, any tips on how to cope with that? I try and talk with her to sooth her and she eats like someone is going to steal her bottle, then vomits it ALL back up. And I tried the trick with the prevacid tabs lastnight thank you... rubbing it around in her cheeck worked ALOT better =)

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
In my opinion, the pH probe isn't bad for a little one. Maggie had hers at 7wks and did fine. It's a tiny cord stuck down the baby's nose (sounds worse than it is) and it measures how acidic the liquid coming up is. Usually it's inserted early in the morning and taken out the next morning. Maggie really didn't mind it at all. She cried a little while it was inserted but didn't know it was there after that. Sounds like you've got one insensitive pediatrician. I would have told her a thing or two! My old ped gave us the run around a little while, but he was never insensitive or rude. I can't believe a female ped would be like that especially.

Good luck finding a better pediatrician!

Goodness, that makes me so upset for you. That is just so rude. Your pedi clearly forgot she works for you! I would write the clinic/hospital she works for a letter if I were you. Cooper had the probe at 5w and it wasn't that bad, and it confirmed the severity of the GERD. She is such a cutie, sorry y'all are having such a rough time. Here is the link to a previous post w/ pics of some of our kiddos during their probes. http://www.reflux.org/reflux/webdsc01.nsf/vwID/VASV-7GSL99?OpenDocument

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
How rude!! Geez, you're almost better taking your chances at urgent care than dealing with such an insensitive, condenscending person. I can certainly feel your pain - Halley was a BIG time vomiter. When we brought her to a pedi GI, we were told the same thing (in pretty much the same tone as your pedi) - all babies spit up. I was so frustrated by the end of that appointment I wanted to rip his face off. Fortunately, we have an excellent pedi and the others in his group are equally good. We were able to get Halley the treatment she needed from him - thank God. I'm glad that you at least have the pedi GI on your side. Sending you good regular pedi locating vibes :-)

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
she is beautiful! i had a peditrician yell @ me when I said the only way any of us could get some sleep was to sleep in a recliner with coyle propped upon me. she told me i'd kill my child. she said her daughter had reflux really bad so she gave her prevacid and let her cry while she slept on her back. we have a new doctor.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Can someone tell me WHY these people are doctors?!?!? You know, I would have been taken to task if I treated ANY of my patients or athletes that way! Where does "bedside manner" come into play?

Okay, enough vent. I have a fabulous pediatrician AND pediatric GE, so we've been very blessed with that. I had a NASTY OB/GYN though, and when I was told that my severe PPD was "baby blues - get over it" I vowed not to return.

We didn't do the ph probe, but from what I understand it's not that bad. We did the scope and barium swallow, both of which my dd did fine with.

Check with your
doctor first!
