Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Staying on Prevacid over a year of age...
Keira's GI wanted us to stop Prevacid after 1 year. I don't think that's going to work. I'm not sure if he'll even write a script after that though. One year for Keira is next month! She's on the Similac Sensitive now which is a big change but I can still tell she has some reflux although it doesn't seem to bother her. I think it WOULD if she wasn't on her meds though. If anyone else had to deal w/ convincing their doctor to let them keep their child on meds please let me know how it went...

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
No, and I don't understand that at all! Could you get your pedi to write a script for her? I would maybe understand trying to wean to a lower dosage gradually and see what happens, but stopping just because she's one seems insane.

Lauren's 14 months and we aren't planning to stop her prevacid for another few months.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
My GE said we'll be starting the wean at 11 months (later this month), and though my dd's got some silent reflux now, I'm going to give it a shot. I do know my ped will continue the rx if needed though. I'd say talk to both MD's and have THEM talk to each other as well.

Kelly, mom of two boys with GERD. John (born 11/03) was on 40mg Nexium til 15 mos old. Second son Brian (born 05/07) started on Zantac. Now on 22.5 mg Prevacid Solutabs plus Carafate 0.5 ml 1 x day
Brian is 14 mos and we just weaned his morning dose this week but he still gets the evening dose. I would not hesitate to start his morning dose back up if he seems like it bothers him.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Someone needs to tell your GI that not all kids outgrow reflux magically at the age of 1! When I couldn't get Sebastian's loser GI to write him a new prescription, I called our amazing allergist. Guess what? I picked it up THAT DAY. Is there another doc you can ask? Dr. Wood doesn't even want me to rush Sebastian off infant Neocate any time soon. We'll begin discussing it after age 15-18 months or so. Same goes for the meds. Hope little Keira continues to do well!

Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
At a year is when they switched K from Zantac to Prevacid. He said that my LO was maxed out on Zantac and he had to switch. At 18 months the GI black mailed me and said he wouldn't treat K anymore without a scope. I knew he didn't need one and sure enough, not a thing was found. Doc had us try a wean at that point. I was scared, angry, frustrated. We had tried weans at every stage: 4 months, 8 months, 1 year. Naturally I assumed this would fail also. I always new about the 10th day: night wakings, comfort drinking, food refusal. at 18 months it worked! He is still off meds. He refluxes, I see him do it daily and hear the "burps" that aren't really burps. However, he doesn't have any pain, that we know of. He eats, sleeps, drinks normally. That's my story. Good luck!

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Argh - it's so maddening when doctors just decide to do something without giving any reasoning or any options!! We tried weaning at 4 months, 6 months, 1 year and was finally successful at 15 months. Like Ronya said, Halley still refluxes occasionally, but it doesn't seem to bother her like it used to and it's been manageable with Mylanta. I guess what you can do is try weaning now and see how she does - maybe she'll surprise you. We dropped a quarter pill a week. If she does worse, then you know you need to investigate your other options. Good luck!

That is so frustrating. You are the one with hr 24/7 and knows how she is doing. If your not ready, you shouldn't have to stop it yet. So soryy!

mom to 4 kids with probable
Mitochondrial Disease
Dealing with Fundo, J tube feedings,Severe Dysmotility,Aspiration,Asthma,
Connective Tissue Disorder,
Visceral Hyperalgesia, and more
Many meds
That is nuts. ALthough a lot of kids outgrow GERD by one year, not all do, some dont outgrow it until closer to 2, and some unfortuantely never outgrow it. I would definately see if her ped would write an rx to keep her on it if you still think she needs it. There is no magic number for outgrowing GERD, grrr...
Check with your
doctor first!
