neocate/constipation
can neocate cause constipation?? since audrey was 3 weeks old i have been non-consistantly suplementing with neocate. she has had less then half a can over 4 weeks; even then most of those bottles she did not drink all of.

i am just curious b/c last week i gave audrey prune juice and sugar water every day for a week and she still didn't go. on saturday she was beside herself so i finally gave her a suppository. Well this week we are on day 5 of ONLY breast milk and 4 oz so far of neocate and still nothing. I checked the neocate website and it said nothing i could find on the subject. what do you all think?

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
Allie was born with constipation issues, and when we switched to neocate, she had trouble even WITH a suppository. It can make it VERY bad indeed. Once we called her ped and told her it had been 5 days w/o a bowel movement (and that was with two babylax) she pulled her immediately from the neocate and was put onto another formula.

I have nothing to add on the Neocate. I just wanted to chime in and say wow! Emi is getting so grown up looking. She looks so much older then any of the other pics I've seen! Nolan had constipation issues and I started to give him corn syrup water and that helped tons. I hope you find help soon.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I'm so sorry! Sebastian has had trouble with constipation ever since we switched to Neocate in January. We tried Lactulose, and he reacted BIG TIME (allergic). Pear juice and prune just gave him stomach cramps and diarrhea. The only thing that has worked is Miralax. Can you try that?

thanks i think i will go get some nutramigen to suppelment, i used the neocate b/c it was free from the website. i am not too sure when her constipation issues started b/c i suppelmented with milk based until she was 2 weeks old, her puking wasn't obiviously milk related for a while. i suppelmented with neocate and she stopped puking, but around that time she stopped pooping too lol

and amber i know!!! emi is soo big she is such a little person now, no more itty bitty baby... i wonder if corn syrup is much different then sugar water?? we have been doing 2 oz of water and 2 tsp of sugar.

i am still not too sure yet if this is a functional issue like emily's or a food issue. it shows all the signs of functional b/c when i do finally get her to go (sometimes 2 laxitives later) she has thick runny poop, would b/f constipation be drier? does anybody know?

I did one tsp cornsyrup to 2 tsp of warm water. i would do it morning and night until he had a bm then I would wait 2 days and start again. They say bm you can go a few days w/o a bm but if he didn't have one every other day his reflux was terrrible. When he switched to formula I did it every bottle till he had a bm and then I waited until the next day and started it again until he had a bm. With it he had a daily bm. I'm not sure what the difference between sugar water and corn syrup water but it helped Nolan a lot.

They say that a constipated breast milk diaper would be thick like peanut butter. I was told if his bm being bf look like pb then he was constipated. TMI~ I know. why do they make it compared to food?

Jodi, first time mom to baby Mason born at 28 weeks 12-10-07. He has GERD, DGE, MSPI, ?food allergies, and hypotonia (starts PT end of July). On Neocate (thickened with Simply Thick) and on prevacid and EES. Home apnea/bradycardia monitor d/c'd finally at 7 months!
Not sure I can help but I have a few thoughts and questions-does she seem bothered, is her belly distended, is she fussy, etc? Is this a big change for her? When Mason started Neocate he had drastically fewer BM's and I was very concerned. When he did have one it was/is (on the Neocate) a small amount and thick and sticky (gross-sorry), and stinky! Absolutely anytime you change these guys diet there will most likely be a change in their bowels. I tried lactulose and/or prune juice and it gave him diarrhea. In the end I realized that even though it was very different than his breast milk days, it did not bother him.

sorry, sorry, sorry, I just re-read the posts and see that you said she was very bothered! Sorry to hear that, I guess to wrap up my thoughts, if she doesn't need the Neocate specifically, then I would try something else (I think you said Nutramigen). Neocate is so expensive too!
