What would you do first?
Nolan is 10 months at 11 I want to either try a med wean or start to switch him over to milk. Which would you do 1st? My doctor pretty much said that I could try a med wean when I thought he was ready again and she wrote a scrip for him until 15 months. She will be on maternity leave soon and we won't see her until he is 15 months. She thought that at close to a year we could try it again. Nolan has been doing just fine on dairy products and he is on milk based formula so I thought that wean would be easy. I would like some opinions because I don't want to do them at the same time. I'm almost leaning more towards the formula?!?!?!?! I don't know. Give me some opinions. LOL!

I would do the milk switch first, that way you will know it isnt reflux causing issues if he seem to have problems with it. Good Luck!

Diagnosed A/R at 6 wks

Zoo Boo Trick-or-Treating (pic).
I would do the meds first and then the milk. If he is still on meds, how would you know if the milk is an issue.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
agree with k-mom. it be hard to tell. chances are he shouldn't have a problem with the milk since he can have yogurt, cheese, etc. with no issues.

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
We did milk first and then meds, mainly because (1) she had so much difficulty when I was bfing and had milk (2) she couldn't tolerate "regular" milk based formulas and (3) we had already been through 3 unsuccessful med weans. One piece of advice - if he does not do well tummy-wise with whole milk, try 2% - that worked very well for us. Good luck with whatever you decide!

elaboating on my earlier post... If you take him off reflux meds first, then you go to try the milk, how do you know if issues he might have may be from reflux symptoms coming back because he is off the meds???HTH

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
I agree with Jessica...and not myself..LOL That's soo funny...there's another Jessica here now....Welcome...

I woudl do the milk first. And wouldn't try to wean meds until around 15 months or so. I think that would be th esafer bet since Nolan is already tolerating milk products BUT you have never done a med wean.

We started Jedd on a next step milk based formula at 11 onths, pediasure. It didn't go well BTW but that was becasue he needed a broken down formula nd Pediasure jsut wasn't cutting it in that dept.

Good luck.

At about 8.5 months we did a med wean and we only cut back a 1/4 pill and he had problems. So I have tried a med wean and it was unsuccessful. I'm curious what others have tried.

Mom (Danie) to Adam (9-4-03) & Nate (3-7-07) Nate was diagnosed with silent AR at 2 months old. He was on neocate, prevacid 30mg per day and couldn't start solids till he was almost 8 months old. He started cow's milk at 14 months and is currently off all meds!! So far so good :) PIC: Disney trip 2008. Nate didn't know Piglet was there, he didn't like the characters too much.
We did the med wean first. In your case, i would do the milk wean first. My reasons for doing milk first is this...if he tolerates it well on the meds BUT has a hard time with it off the meds...wouldn't it be an AR issue and NOT a milk issue? I don't know...it's so up and down, lol. That's my take. I probably don't even make sense. IMHO...I'd rather get him milk weaned and then work on the med wean...that's just me. Since Nate was on neocate, our GI wanted us to wean the meds first...then SLOWLY add milk to the neocate. We ended up having to re-intro the meds for a short period of time but he only needed it for a few weeks. HTH

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I think I would do the milk first...then you know if you have any struggles that they are from the milk and not the meds...once you have him switched, you can jsut wean him off meds...hopefully for good! Why the early switch to milk,t hough? Just wondering...

Maggie is now 3 years old and reflux free (knock on wood). I still check in some to see how everybody is doing :) Hugs to all!
My 2 cents: I would do the meds first. This way if he does ok with no meds, you can proceed with milk. If you do milk first and he does ok, you won't know if he's ok bc he's still on meds or if he's truly ok. does that make sense?

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
We are doing milk first, per our GI's advice. But I am not in a hurry to wean from meds -- at all. Lauren has just started eating consistently, so I want her to enjoy food before I start messing with meds...kwim?

Our 1 year old daughter has silent reflux, hypotonia as well as benign external hydrocephalus. We are currently weaning onto whole milk (we'll see if it works) and she is also on Prevacid 15mg per day.
Well my plan is to start the milk first and then by about 1.5 years of age start the med wean depending on how things go. We started the yogurt at 6/7 months-fine, cut out the elevation in her crib-fine, now she's on Lactose Free formula-fine and next will be milk and then later on a med wean. Just our plans though. :)
Check with your
doctor first!
