Is this reflux? Help
My DD is on Prilosec, just started on last Friday and so far we are noticing no improvement at all. She was switched from Zantac because she was not eating well. Also, I have doubts that my dd has reflux. this is what she does when she is eating: If she is groggy or asleep she will usually eat the whole bottle without any problems. If she is awake she will take about an ounce or two and then she will start wiggling around and sometimes it sounds like she is closing off the back of her throat, then it sounds like she is clearing her throat and then she might make these gulping sounds. She turns her head from side to side and tries to hit the bottle out with her hands. Eventually she will kick the bottle out by sticking out her tongue and usually she will not let me put it back in. Sometimes after an hour or so she will take some more. she rarely spits up and the only time I hear stuff come up is when she burps and then she swallows it back down but it does not happen that frequently. She does not arch her back. Other than feeding time she is a happy baby and even when I am feeding her she is not crying unless I keep forcing the bottle on her. She sleeps very well. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, any tricks to get her to eat would be appreciated. thanks, A worried Mom!

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site:
She may have silent reflux hence the reason you don't see any vomitting......From the sounds you are describing is may be she is aspirating on some of the liquds. So, when she is awake it is VERY uncomfortable to eat because it bothers her lugs. When she is very drowsy and you feed her she can't notice the discomfort there froe she eats well.

Have they suggested a swallow study??? This could tellyou if any liquids ae going into her lungs insead of her belly where thye should go.

It sounds like AR to me. My son was a vomiter but not all the babies are. The food aversion sounds like many who have walked this path before you. Many parents do the sleep feeding when their babies were averse. It takes a while for the drugs to work. Hang in there and come back to talk to us.

That sounds a lot like Nicholas. He is a silent refluxer (most of the time)-meaning he swallows back. He too eats more when sleepy and turned his head and would hit bottle out of mouth with hands (even very early on). He did used to arch his back and cry too before we got him on the prevacid. He still doesn't eat a lot at once ( he eats less but more often), but he doesn't turn his head, arch or cry as often. I think the only "trick" to get the eating to go better is to see if she needs a reflux med to make her more comfortable. Keep us updated.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
How old is she? By not eating well, how often/how much is she eating? how do you feed her? by that i mean on a scheudle or on-demand? sounds like she might have a little silent reflux that pain-wise is well controlled by the losec. is she drinking too much @ night?

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Have you tried a smaller nipple size? We had my dd on a size one nipple FOREVER. That really helped her control the flow.

thanks for your responses. She is 2.5 months old. I try to keep her to 3 hour feedings, she has a milk and soy allergy and is on Alimentum. She only wakes twice at night, once I wake her at 10 to feed and once she wakes on her own at 3. Each time she takes about 3-4 oz. these are her best feeds of the day because she is asleep. In a typical day she will take between 20-22oz and most of these are taken while she is asleep. Dr. says Prilosec can take 10-14 days to work we are on day 5 so maybe things iwll improve. She has not had a swallow test or any upper GI testing. Plenty of Lower GI tests and everything on that end seems okay.
