Throw Up Question-Sorry

Hi Ladies! I have a throw up question for you. Katie has never been a reflux baby to throw up 10 times a day, at least to actually throw it up. We have witnessed what appears to me as her throwing up into her mouth and swallowing (sorry) many times a day and would think she might feel better if she actually got it out. Lately she seems to actually be throwing it up and I have noticed it smells really acidic. She also is back to not smelling like a baby at night; smelling like she has thrown up even though there isn't any in her bed. She is on 10.5 mg. of Prevacid which I know can make her poop smell bad (which it does) but it appears to me that the Prevacid isn't really blocking the acid if she and her throw up smell like stomach acid. Anyone have any experience with this?

Elyse's always smelled acidic no matter what dosage she was on of any med, including an adult dose of nexium! My poor baby had to wait it out....now she rarely throws/spits up, but she does what you describe as throwing up in her mouth and then swallows it (we can see it in there), and that smells acidic too :(:::: I guess I don't have an answer for you :( Oh yeah, i am working for someone the morning of Elyse's GI appt....I will have to see if I can work something out to still meet with you, maybe in the afternoon!

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
I would call and talk to the GI nurse and tell her what you see happening. Does Katie make a sour face when that happens? She may need a higher dose or a second med like Pepcid? Pepcid has done wonders for us at night, but I hear it can be quite expensive...

During a med wean and also pre prevacid Nolans' breath would smell acidy and he would have wet acid burps. I would look into an increase in meds to help. When Nolan was back on his full dose it stopped smelling so bad. Do you use the solutabs. The liquid can have a short shelf life and isn't always mixed the same. I'd look into it anyway. HTH:)

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
I agree with calling the GI's office to see if a higher dose is needed. We smelled acid on Halley's breath and her vomit every time we tried to wean unsuccessfully. Now that she seems to be cured, we rarely smell the acid. HTH.

Thanks for the input!

We did have to go back down in mg. for the Prevacid. She is supposed to take 3/4 of the 15mg. tablet; 1/4 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening. I was giving her 1/2 morning and the other 1/2 at night and we were back to moaning in sleep, restless etc. The GI said she doesn't weight enough for the whole tablet as of last week so we went back down to 3/4 as of Tuesday. They started us on the liquid but because it has to be sent to us from a non-Kaiser hospital it can take a week thus only giving us a week so we went to the solutabs. She HATED the taste of the solutabs initially and loved the taste of Zantac; I had tried both and couldn't believe she didn't like Prevacid! She now opens her mouth to take it when we say "medicine" and seems to enjoy the flavor. She also chews it for a really long time; poor thing misses solids!!

Jen~I will ask about Pepcid at her appt. I use 1 ml. of Mylanta when she seems really crabby and that does seem to help. Thanks for the input!!

If you call the pharmacy with he rcurrent weight they can tell how much of the mylanta she can have.

I only say that because whne Jedd was tiny he was taking 5ml 4 times per day of Carafate. It's like super mylanta by RX only....seem like the dosage for her coudl be higher.

Nanibear~Zantac reduces the amount of stomach acid but Prevacid is supposed to stop the stomach acid from being produced. They both help to make you feel better as the reflux continues without having stomach acid in the mix. Since I am smelling stomach acid I am questioning if the Prevacid is actually working. Thanks for the input!
