Which Formulas?
Ladies, I am new to the forum and introduced my self in another post but I am curious as to which formula's do you use for your Reflux and GERD babies? We have tried everything and nothing seems to help. I haven't noticed a difference in anything helping though there were some that I knew right away when she threw up the bottle right after it all went down with every feeding. Enfamil Good Start~threw up every bottle Alimentum~threw up every bottle Nutragamin~no decrease from Enfamil; baby achny cleared up Good Start Soy~threw up every bottle (baby achny came back) Similac Isomil~increased projectile vomit Now we are back on Enfamil! My DD did great on Enfamil AR but our pediatrician says it is the old way? I thought about Enfamil Gentlese or Similac Sensitive? I think she does better on the enfamil brand though. We do have a GI appt on Tuesday so I didn't want to switch off of Soy but it was obviously not working and she was increased fussy and throwing up with it. So what would you do?

Jessica, Mommy to Jedd, severe reflux, severe food and oral aversions, Finally G tube free!!! VSD repair 4-24-07 (open heart surgery), hypospadias, repaired 3 times and Ear tubes Visit Jedd at his CB site: www.caringbridge.org/visit/jedd
It all depends....is there a suspected MSPI??? If so that changes everything.

We finally settled on Alimentum for my DS...he vomitted EVERYTHING no matter what we have him so we stopped trying new formulas.

After he turned one we switched to Pediasure and is was horrible!!! He ended up on Peptamen Jr. He did absolutely fabulous on that!!! The least amount of vomit on that one. You ahve to be over 1 for that though..sorry!!!!

I wonder if at that upcoming GI apt. you should discuss DGE.....that may be the issue???? Esp. if that much vomitting is going on.

If that is the case than you need a broken down formula. So that would mean going to Alimentum, Nutramigen, or Pregestamil. Thsoe are the top 23 in regards to broken down formulas.

However...LOL

If there is allergies suspected you need to go/could try possibly Elecare.

Asking about formulas is a loaded question....each baby does good on differnet formulas....GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Ok what is MSPI? We have tried Nutramigen and Alimentum. Nutramigen didn't do any better than regular Enfamil. Alimentum each bottle was thrown right back up. We have tried the hypoallergenic formulas, soy etc and nothing seems to do better so why would I need to use a special formula and not just the regular ones. Heather

Used Zantac - 1.0 ml twice a day
Weaned at 1 year
Back on Zantac at 15 months
Hi! I don't know if this helps, but we used Gentlease (Target makes a generic) and it worked well for us. I have heard other moms say that the ready-to-feed of some brands is better tolerated than the powdered. It might make a difference for you. If you are doing both breast milk and formula, you might be seeing a reaction to something you are eating. We switched to all formula so that he could have more consistent feedings. The milk-soy protein intolerance is also worth checking into. It can have a profound effect. Good luck!

Kathryn, Pager Volunteer and mommy to Emily Mia 02/04/07. 3 years old with GERD. 30mg Prevacid and Pepcid AC. Mylanta needed for flares. Failed prilosec med switch. Tried and failed many med weans but GERD and pain are well controlled. Functional constipation. Reoccurring SBBO. Suspected IBD or autoimmune disease. Resolved issues: MSPI, CSID (acquired), Stage 2 kidney reflux, Chronic diarrhea.
Audrey Meadow 06/20/08. born 34/35 weeks. Still b/f and eats everything! ftt and chronic constipation.
you really do need to stick with a formula for at least a week to really judge if you can see a diff. IF you l/o is MPI/MSPI it could take a week to 10 days for the milk or soy proteins to clear out of the system. Unless directed by a doctor don't switch formulas weekly or daily. Its sad but out little AR babies take a while to adjust to changes.

I would stick to the most hypoallergenic formula you can get (elecare, neocate, nutramigen or alimentum) until your GI apt and ask them about the possibility of it being something PHYSICALLY causing your baby to throw up, if that is ruled out ask them about a formula thickener (such as rice, oats or non calorie thickener) and if hypoallergenic formulas should be continued or you can get away with using milk or soy based formula.

Good luck and welcome! :)

no she isn't bf any more. We were on nutragamin for 2 weeks, enamil for a week and a half. the only time i came off after two or three days is because of obivous things. like with alimentum and good start she threw up feedings right after every bottle. I gave her the soy but came off after 3 days because she was projectile more and her normal mushy newborn poop was a watery wrse than adults with diahrea smell. I just went back to enfail until our tues appt because it is what i have here

I hope you can get some answers at the Dr appt. It can be soo hard to figure out which formula is the best.

I woudl see if he/she ahs some samples of Elecare. IF that works maybe there is a serious issue going on with the Milk intolerance.

It's worth a shot.

I hope time goes fast so you can get to your appt quckly. It is soo hard when LO are struggling.

Have you had any reflux testing done yet????

DS #1 (7/05) - Just ReDX'd Refluxer! Prevacid Solutab starting 4/8/09. Lots of food and environmental allergies. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Speech Delays, Developmental Delays, Severe Muscle Tone Weakness.
DS #2 (1/08) ReDX'd refluxer. Milk and soy allergies with Soy Lecithin allergies. Oat milk drinker, Rice protein powder, DHA, and vitamins added for bulk and needed nutrition. Weak muscle tone, slightly developmentally delayed, SPD confirmed.
Which meds is she on? We use Nutramigen but we also have to thicken it with Simply Thick Honey thickness and are on Prevacid twice a day. Take any one of those things out of the system and he refluxes like crazy. Sometimes it's a combination of treatments that works best. My doctors have also told me, as have many ladies on here, that the stuff coming up often doesn't stop, it's making it safe for their esophagus that's the most important. A friend of mine has a son that had reflux worse than my son's and his didn't stop coming up, but they did stop the acidic tendencies in the refluxed fluid. She literally put him in a bib all the time and carried a cloth diaper around to pick up the inevitable mess. Hoping you can find an answer.

Just curious here-what size nipple are you using. If feeding are going to fast that can cause the vomit as well. I will say when my dd was on the prevacid (sorry just thought of this from your previous post) she had horrible diahrea and it smelled horrible-like dead fish! As soon as we got her off the prevacid that stopped. HTH!

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
i remember that too. prevacid gave rancid smelly poops. sorry to here the hypos aren't working out. you should have them def. check for physical problems. oh, and i agree a level 2 nipple might be too fast for her now. since the alimentum is so much thinner than others she might be drinking too much at one time. how much does she weigh?

Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
We used Nutramigen, but we still dealt with LOTS of vomit every single day. We just used multiple bibs and had a large stock of cloth diapers on hand (we had 36 of them that we would go through every few days). If there are no structural issues (an upper GI can rule that out) and if she's comfortable pain-wise, it may be an unfortunate thing that you have to deal with for a little while. We don't have any pictures of Halley under the age of 9 months where she doesn't have some huge bib on. Just out of curiosity, is your dd gaining weight?

We use the Nutramigen. I agree, whatever you are trying, you need to try for a while to see if it is working. Too many changes too soon, I would think would be hard on her system and hard to tell if they would help. Good luck.

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We did the switches a lot too, though no less than a week for anything other than Neocate. Here's the list (in order): Enfamil Lipil, Alimentum, Neocate, Similac Isomil, Enfamil AR, Gentlease, Similac Sensitive RS, Nutramigen, and Good Start. I echo all the moms who are saying check for MPI/MSPI, since those kids need to be watched extra carefully.

One note though - Not much seems to help the pukers stop puking, regardless of formula or breastmilk diet. My dd puked everything we gave her, including Neocate. This was a physiological issue with the LES being so weak and not an intolerance issue.

typing with one hand as the wahhh wahhh monster is fussing. We just moved to the size 2 nipple because she was fussing 1/2 way through her bottles and would give up and go to sleep. With the size 2 there is no gulping, gagging, chocking, just like the size 1 but she doesn't get mad 1/2 way through and go to sleep. also, I tried all the other formula's even soy and then just in the last day or two upped the nipple to size two. With a size two she will drink 4 oz and size 1 about 2. I still stop her and burp her but she drinks more contently. We are on prevacid twice a day now. Ok so she had a poop today and it was back to her normal consisitency and not the dead fish smell so I think it was the soy formula.

I think one of the most frustrating things about having a refluxer is that there is SO MUCH trial and error. Sounds like you may be on the right track with the nipple size. When my dd was on soy formula, it looked like a giant blew his nose in her diaper - ewwww.
Check with your
doctor first!
