State probes veterans officer Inquiry requested after co-workers complained

Published: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 3:15 a.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 11:20 a.m.

Complaints by co-workers about ***** County Veterans' Affairs Officer Sammy ****'s job performance have prompted a state investigation.

Jennifer Timmons, a spokeswoman with the State Law Enforcement Division, confirmed on Monday her office had initiated a case file, based on information and a request from state Rep. Moss.

"We do have an open investigation against Sammy at the request of Rep. Moss into allegations of improprieties in the County Veterans' Affairs Office," Timmons said.

She and Moss would not discuss the nature of the allegations, but rumors of problems in the local VA office have continued to linger, after first surfacing publicly seven months ago.

The officer who directs the VA-related business is elected by veterans in Cherokee County and approved by the delegation. **** was chosen about six years ago and had been unopposed since.

"Usually we honor the veterans' decision," said state Rep. Olin Phillips. "It's similar to the holdover status of the magistrates. They continue to serve until removed."

But in January, during a meeting with the legislative delegation, several veterans complained about how **** assisted veterans with filing claims and scheduled transportation to doctor's visits and for hospital treatment.

Tom , a veteran who also volunteered as a driver, said **** became unreasonable when Reid, who had chemotherapy treatments, was unable to transport a fellow veteran for an appointment.Tom, who is also a City councilman, asked in a tearful plea that veterans receive more empathy from their local director.

A follow-up meeting in June focused on ****'s performance, prompting Moss to request an opinion from the state Attorney General's Office regarding his possible removal from the office.

The answer Moss received was based on previous rulings from other cases by the AG's office and confirmed the possibility, citing recommended conditions of presenting "good cause," giving **** notice and providing him an opportunity to be heard prior to the action.

Two weeks ago, the delegation met in a closed session with the VA office staff and a leader in the local veterans community. Two women and Willard work in the office. ****, who was on vacation leave, did not attend.

Phillips said after the meeting that there was no choice but to call in a proper agency to consider what he called "all allegations," after the two employees came forward with their concerns.

"This is the third meeting. We can't continue. We have to bring it to some resolution or settlement. We will take care of it," Phillips said.

Moss said Monday he could not discuss the particulars of any of the complaints, agreeing with Phillips they were allegations.

"That's why we closed that session. A tape was made, and the information forwarded to SLED. Sammy needs to be vindicated or these allegations need to be proven," Moss said. "But Sammy needs to be protected. I say, if any of these accusations are true, they need to be proven."

Calls to **** and messages left for him were not returned Monday.

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
Ok, you win. I'll keep my crazy FIL because even though he is about 51 cards short of a full dec, he means well. UGH.
