Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
At the risk of sounding redundant...Pneumonia!

I can't believe I'm the second person today to have to post this one! Sarah has pneumonia. It's JULY for pete's sake, isn't the summer supposed to be relatively virus free?!?

What really gets me is that she *caught* this from her cousin. I always sort of thought pneumonia was a secondary thing, caused by asperation or an illness that involved junk in the lungs. However, my nephew was in town a week ago and all the kids were in the pool. Sarah was under a rubber raft in the pool with my nephew when my MIL casually mentions that nephew has been a little under the weather since he came to town...he's been coughing and has a 'slight' fever. How slight, I ask? 104 degrees! That's slight?!? And thanks for letting me know this AFTER it's too late! No way was Sarah going to avoid catching whatever it was, locked up under a rubber raft in the water breathing the same darn air. Turns out (five days later...when he finally got to a doctor) he had pneumonia, and it's "Atypical" pneumonia which often IS catchy. So here we are a week later, exact same symptoms and sure enough she's got it. Sigh. At least she's 9 and not a baby, it's not so dangerous at her age and because I knew my nephew had it we caught this pretty early. My brother in law also seems to have it...he's missed a week of work and is on antibiotics as well.

Sometimes I really wonder how my hubby and his siblings survived childhood. Honestly...MIL let my nephew's illness go on for over a week, 10 days or so of high fevers and cough, before she finally took him in. I *told* her it could be pneumonia a week before she took him in, she was giving him benedryl and doing nothing else because she was sure it was an allergy(!?!). Sigh. How do I politely ask her to let me know in ADVANCE if a child in her care has a fever of over, say...102 degrees?!? Sorry, I'm a little over the top irritated right now and I'm not thinking well due to lack of sleep. Anyway, I'm sure Sarah will be better in a few days...but sheesh, we could have done without this!

Some people just don't think. My MIL will always come over when she has a cold claiming she's not contagious (I've never seen an MD after her name), that "it's just the tail end" of a cold. One time, I swear, the tail end lasted for two weeks. long tail!!! Hope Sarah feels better soon!

Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.

You could meet them with a thermometer in hand. That would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. You won't have to worry about kids going too long while being sick and she might but probably won't get the hint to keep sick ones away from your healthy ones. I know it won't work though cause I told my MIL after she was 2 hours late once that I was buying her an alarm clock so she could be on time to visit my dd; my mom was there and thought we were going to come to blows. Gotta go with Maggiesmom and agree that in-laws are the best!!!!!

Yup-gotta love the IL's. Mine always come around the kids when they are sick claiming it is just allergies (none of them have allergies) or a sinus infection and that isn't contageous. Then why do the kids always get sick after you have been around them. We did come to blows about it w/ my MIL after she did not tell us she was sick and kept Aubrey and we ended up sick and on ab's. I hope she gets better soon!!!! I know what you mean-it is July/August this crap should be gone!

Molly Beth...Poor little G! I went to their blog and read about it after I saw your post. Strep, HFM, *and* a broken leg! Yipes. I guess I will be thankful for Sarah's piddly pneumonia, which is actually much better after a day of antibiotics. Can he have fruit juice of any kind? Maybe some nice popcicles made from whatever juice he's not allergic to...

Does this ever go away?
Hello
Well, as soon as a child temperture goes past 99 I am alarmed. He should have been taken to the emergency room right way or the doctor. Since no one else is going to protect your child, you have no choice, but to politely tell her about your concern. Do not be afraid, I am sure if the shoe was on the other foot, she or he would do the same. Hope your child feels better.
Check with your
doctor first!
