Jesse, Mommy to:
Joseph William, 2/19/2007.
Diagnosed *finally* with GERD at 11 months. Stopped pevacid at 2.5 years old.
Lilybelle, 3/11/2009.
Another kid with REFLUX! Upper GI on Monday. PH Probe and Modified GI in a few weeks. Currently takes 7.5mg Prevacid once daily.
pneumonia!
Took Joseph to the doctor this morning.... 5 hours, a blood test, a urine test, and an x-ray later he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Treatment is an antibiotic for now... no hospital yet. If he is not significantly better in the next few days we have to take him back in.

MIL came to the rescue... she went in the x-ray with Jojo (I couldn't b/c of the pregnancy) and then took dd home with her and is keeping her overnight and all day tomorrow. She is my favorite person today.

Luckily we have an appointment with the GI specialist Monday. I am really glad we will be able to discuss all this with them. I kept bringing up the GERD with the stupid doctors and nurses today and they would just smile and nod. I really think they just have no fucking clue about GERD's severity.

I think he aspirated due to the cold and his reflux and then it developed into pnuemonia: "Babies with acid reflux can also develop respiratory problems from stomach contents entering the nose, windpipe or lungs. When material enters the lungs this is called aspiration. Many babies are first diagnosed as having acid reflux while investigating the cause of recurrent breathing problems such as wheezing, stridor or pneumonia. Acid reflux is now recognized as a cause of sinus infections."

Poor kid.

Oh my. What a nightmare. I hope the antibiotics start working soon. It's hard to imagine our little ones will someday be over this. But for now it is so hard. Stay strong. We will be thinking of you. I hope you can find a way to get a little rest.

Lorenzo b.4/25/07 1 week in NICU w/ aspirate pneumonia from a reflux episode; diagnosed GERD at 9weeks; Used Zantac for 5months. Currently using Chinese Medicine and Craniosacral Therapy. GERD, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask me about breastfeeding a refluxer! Pic: day 5 in the NICU.
Oh, I'm so sorry... Yes, it seems that there is a lot of blank looks from medical staff when it comes to GERD. Lorenzo aspirates regularly, and I am always worried about pneumonia, as well as the development of asthma. I find it so frustrating that so many doctors are unaware of the relationship between them.

I hope that health returns soon! And somehow I missed the news about your pregnancy -- CONGRATULATIONS!

Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
God, I am so, so sorry. You must have been terrified. I hope you all recover VERY quickly. I had pneumonia when I was three,a nd my left lung collapsed. But here I am now, old, rickety, and healthy! BTW - Sebastian gets chronic sinus infections...had no idea they were related ot reflux. Thank you for sharing!

I am convinced GERD is the culprit of ALL illnesses! Ok so maybe I am exagerating, but you get the idea. Yes, Aubrey had/has stridor and lung inflamation which I was told can be cause by severe reflux. Go figure. ANyhow, I hope everyone gets some rest and feels better soon! Take care of yourself and that little baby Mama! J

Picture: This is what happens when you raise a kid on health food and they get ahold of a Coke! Bad mom, that soda is NOT on the reflux diet.
UPDATE: Isaiah is now 12 and off meds! He is doing great, eating again and hopefully will be catching up in the growing department. I am still in the "hoping it sticks" phase, but we're so happy that he's better!
Oh no! Wow, is it catchy through the internet? Sarah was dx'd today with pneumonia, too! At least she's much older, it's not so scary at her age as it is at Joseph's. Yipes! Congrats, btw, on the pregnancy! Wow, how exciting!!! I hope that that the little guy is much better tomorrow and that you avoid the hospital.

Oh, so sorry to hear about the pneumonia. So scary for a lo. I agree that many people don't understand the ins and outs of reflux (I am still learning myself). I guess most people don't know unless they go through it or know someone who has--but medical staff really should know what can be involved. Hope your lo is better soon. Keep us posted. I'll keep him in my prayers for a speedy recovery. You try to get some rest mama 2 b!

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
I am sooo sorry to hear this, and in the middle of the summer! Our pedi and GI always said that we were lucky to have made it through the winter without aspiration pneumonia. It sucks that they didn't take you seriously! How frustrating!
