Trying the Reglan
Hi all. Nicholas's GI prescribed Reglan about two weeks ago and we were too nervous to try it with him because of the possible side effects and the number of you that had bad experiences. We saw the pulmonologist yesterday and he thought we should give it a try as Nicholas seems to choke on refluxes more between feeds and he feels this may reduce his aspiration. He recommended trying to start with half the dosage to see how he responds. I gave him his first dose this am. Keep your fingers crossed for us that he responds well to it-or at least has no bad side effects. Dread the thought of him being uncomfortable and crying all the time again.

if there are side effects keep in mind that there are other meds that work in a similar fashion. Emma takes bethanecol and i know some lo's take erythromyacin (sp??).

Mom to Charlie - cleft palate and reflux. Meds - zantac, prevacid, mylanta and reglan.
Nicholas's Mom - sounds like we are in the same boat! My son Charlie just went on reglan a few days ago. I am a bit nervous too but feel like we at least have to try it because we really need to get more food into him and keep it down. And Charlie is aspirating too. He had pneumonia which seems to be clearing up on antibiotics. I am certain it is caused by the reflux (vs. food going down the wrong way). He has a cleft palate which makes the risk of aspiration higher so I am really focused on getting the reflux under control. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Susie, Any weird side effects yet?? I am glad to hear that Charlie's pneumonia is clearing up. That is definitley what we are trying to avoid. Of course, also hoping that maybe it will make his esophogus feel better as well as limit any swelling of his larynx, making breathing more difficult with the laryngomalacia. I just wish they could talk to us and tell us what they were feeling. It would make things so much easier!! I hope the reglan works well for your lo. Keep us updated.

ps-obviously, we too want to keep the food down, but as you can tell, our little one seems to be getting plenty of nutrients!!! (greatfully). Most often when he refluxes, he swallows it back down. This is what our first born did too.

Josh 12 yrs colic as a baby
Jenna 6 yrs dream baby
Jessica (6/11/07) Silent reflux dx at 3 weeks
Went off meds successfully at 3 mos
Went back on Prevacid 8 mg TID 1/3/08
I hope it goes well for you. It really is a wonderful drug for some kids and not everyone gets the side effects. Of course keep in mind that there are other options if you see unusual jerky movements or your son can't sleep hardly at all/has severe restlessness. It helped my daughter quite a bit while she was able to tolerate it. Cristy

Renee - no side effects yet but it is only Day 3. I'll let you know. He's doing better but he's on so many meds it is hard to tell which one is kicking in! Susie

david's parents
David is currently on Omeprazole, 1.25 tsp/day and Reglan, 1.3 ml/3 times/day. Diagnosed with GERD at 4 weeks, barium test at 6 weeks, went to a GI specialist at 4 1/2 months
Hi. This is our first time trying out this forum - we just found it! Our son, David, just started Reglan about a week ago and we are still waiting, impatiently, to see results. He has gotten a little crankier, but it doesn't seem as volatile as some of the other reactions I've read about on this site and it comes and goes. I'm just waiting to see a decrease in the spit-up...our normally light colored living room carpet is spotted all over with orange spit-up from sweet potatoes, carrots & squash! David isn't gaining weight very well (is at 13#14 oz. at nearly 5 months) and we'd like to see that improve as well. Have many people found success with Reglan?
