Melissa - Mommy to Sebastian, born 9/28/07 @ 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.75 in. At docs at 12 months: 27 pounds and 32 in! Good grief! GERD - currently on Prevacid suspension (liquid equivalent of 45 mg a day). Allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, all treenuts, peanuts, fish, shellfish, peas, sesame, bananas, barley, coconut, dust, dust mite, dog, cat, latex. Seasonal allergies. Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). Neocate only - no solids - until further notice (drinks and loves water, too). Loves his doggie, our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, Louise, even though he is allergic to her. Louise will make your doctor a homemade pie if you would like her to. PHOTO: We couldn't do a cake on Sebastian's birthday, but that didn't stop him from tossing around the contents of a big bowl of popcorn! He now tries to eat it when we play with popcorn, so no more of that game.... :(
I have no internet access because I just moved and don't get cable til Friday, but I am pirating internet access from my neighbors just so I can tell you about Sebastian. He had a BAD reaction to his meds and had a diaper full of blood this morning.
It was awful. He is on a strong antibiotic for another sinus infection, this one brought on (we think) by all the dust stirred up when we packed and moved. I packed all his stuff in rubber tubs, but the cardboard boxes all over the house still apaprently bothered him. He was prescribed his antibiotic on Friday. His poop turned BROWN (from normal green) on Sunday (like adult or dog poop...SORRY) and was total diarrhea. Well, today I went in to get him in the morning and he stood up for me to change him as usual (no laying down for diaper changes in our house anymore...SIGH). Well, as soon as I pulled down the diaper, I saw a TON of BLOOD. Like HUGE gobs and gobs of bloody mucous. I called for my husband, and he came running...and could see it from the doorway. We thought it could have been the red stool that this med brings on in rare cases, but the allergist said no, it is blood because 1) this med is cultured on soy and 2) this med's flavoring CONTAINS LACTOSE. What???????????? Thi sis the SECOND time the pharmacy (A DIFFERENT ONE THIS TIME) did catch the lactose...and he is supposedly flagged in the system. They are supposed to called the manufacturer EVERY TIME S gets a new med.

I hope everyone is OK, and I am thinking of your little ones. I will start checking back in this weekend...I miss PAGER! Do have some good news to report - Dr. Wood (who answers his own phone, by the way) prescribed Zegerid for Bassy so we didn't have to deal with the pharmacy compounding it every two weeks. You may recall that the GI refused to change his meds. I am going to try it out as soon as Bassy is feeling better. Miss you all! ~Melissa

Jennifer - 1st time mom. Lauren (6/1/07) diagnosed 9/07 with GER at 3 1/2 months. Prevacid 7.5 mg in the am. Currently drinking whole milk and eating great!!
No longer aspirating! Yippee!
Picture: Why would Lauren play with the hundreds of dollars worth of toys scattered in my living room?!?! When she could play in a box! Estimated move date: Oct. 3rd!
OMG Melissa that had to have been horrible to see! I am so sorry that you had to go through that! Hopefully, it was just a one time thing...

I am glad that you are all moved in but sad that the move has been so hard on Bassy. Jezz, I never thought of the problems a cardboard box could bring!

I'll also tell you this, I am not a fan of most pharmacy's around here. Even the large chains. I think I posted my vents about them inappropriately filling Lauren's meds before you were on. It sucks, but I really don't trust them and they know it.

Take care! Hope to see you more this weekend!

God, I don't know. Maybe it is from the meds and not blood? The allergist seemed so sure, though. Granted, we only talked over the phone (this was the on-call doc in Dr. Wood's office). I saved the diaper, so maybe I will take it to have it tested tomorrow by the ped? Do they do that? Can't believe the internet hasn't crapped out yet.

The one time our pedi talked about testing one of Lauren's diapers it had to be within a few hours (or refrigerated - yuck) and it had been too long.

Is he on Omnicef? It can give RED poop. My dh was ready to take Lauren to the ER because he thought she was bleeding...

We stole internet from our neighbors for almost a year at our townhouse...you could probably use it all night!

Yes! It was Omnicef!! Was it all mucusy? It is huge streaks...not all red...brown diarrhea with BRIGHT RED streaks. The diaper is in a ziploc, but not refrigerated. Why wouldn't the allergist mention this?

We have been on Omnicef twice and both times her poop was red/brown and streaky. I don't remember mucus.... I just doubled checked with dh and he doesn't remember mucus either. I remember that it changed consistency though.

I have no idea why your allergist wouldn't mention it!? I think it even says it's a side effect in the flyers from the pharmacy. I hope that's all it is! Wouldn't that be a HUGE relief.

I tried to post earlier to see if Omnicef was the culprit. I remember Danie freaked about it too and thought blood. It turns us red (well Aubrey and Brandon) when they take it.

Aubrey is on Zegerid and I love it. Well, love hate relationship I should say. The med does wonders for her but mixing it is a pain. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend visiting the marci-kids website and there is a place you can go to and order the syringes-DO IT! It is worth every penny. The pharmacy didn't have anything that would work. I "made do" with some for about 6 mo and just caved and bought the others-wish I would have done it sooner! Best of luck w/ the move! J

3 yr old with GERD, FPIES milk and soy
My son has been on Omnicef many times (way too many!) and his stools always turned reddish, but for him it was always clearly not blood. It would make me take a better look, but could then tell. I've been trying to go to Marci-kds for a couple of days but it says web site not found - anyone else have that?

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Poor little guy!! We've seen reddish brown poop with Halley as well when she's been on Omnicef, but don't recall ever seeing mucous. If he has another bm diaper, just stick it in a ziploc and throw it in the fridge (and then make sure no one goes in there for a snack LOL!)
