Mom to Ethan, born 4/23/08. Diagnosed with Reflux at about 1 month, started medicating with Zantac, which wasn't helpful for us. At about 2.5 months, we started on Prevacid, twice a day, and that is working much better.
Ethan is breastfed and has a few solids that he is enjoying very much.
Breastfeeding and Milk Sensitivity
I am new at this, and don't know all of the abbreviations, so this is likely to be long. Ethan is three months old, and exclusively breastfed. Now that the Prevacid is working for the reflux, and we are getting decent sleep, we are trying to help him be free from what we have termed "screaming gas". Ethan normally passes a lot of gas, most of it painless, but about twelve hours after I have eaten dairy, he will have a 30 minute episode of "screaming gas". I am trying to eliminate dairy from my diet, but occasionally have a forgettful period, where I forget that something will be cooked with a lot of dairy (cheesecake, gravy, etc.). I know a lot of you are dealing with eliminating things from your diet to help your babies, and wondered if you had found anything to help when you make a mistake in eating? I am going to talk to the pediatrician, as well, but wondered if something like me taking "Lactaid" might work, if I realized it soon after I ate the food. Any thoughts?

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
Hi and welcome! I can't think of anything that will help with the gas when you have an "oops". We used Mylanta for Halley's reflux flares but I don't think it would impact his gas at all. Have you tried giving him Mylicon? It didn't help Halley much, but some moms have had good luck with it. Using lactaid is an interesting idea - I'd like to hear how that goes.

Wow, what a cutie you have. I don't know anything for the mess ups except maybe the mylicon gas drops. I would say you should go full blown elimination diet, as described on the dr sears website. It is crazy hard at first but can be truly life saving. My inly regret about the diet was that I did not try it sooner. Even trace amounts if milk can stay in their system for 10 days to 2 weeks. I was the same way at first, not eating anything obviously milk such as cheese, ice cream, ect, but getting in a lot of stuff anyway. Our life has changed so wonderfully since we started the diet. I am the biggest fan of it now, and I was a skeptic. It is worth every once of hard work and you get used to it. If you want to do it, you will have my totally support. I can't express how great of a decision this was for us. Cooper has gained at least 4lbs in 2 months after starting the diet. It took him 2 mo to gain his first pound, so this was huge. He is thriving so well now. It has been amazing. I hope you consider it. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the comments. I haven't tried the Lactaid, and I am seriously considering trying the elimination diet, after the last two days. Ethan has been so fussy, and gassy, despite my perfect elimination of known milk products. I haven't seen a real smile since Sunday :( My husband and I both really enjoy food, and cooking creatively, so this diet is going to be pretty difficult, and may require that I cook seperately for him. (He would suffer through it as well, without complaint, but he enjoys food so much, that I'd hate to see him deprived.) Are there any tips that you have found to making these same few foods more tasty, without causing the baby trouble?

Mom to Eddie 1/07 and Nicholas 6/08. Eddie allergic and refluxer now on cow's milk!!!! Nicholas also a refluxer on prevacid and breast milk. Mom on elimination diet AGAIN!!
Hi and welcome, I love your PIC! the elimination diet tkes time to work. With my first son I started a couple times then stopped, but once the GI put me on a strict milk and soy free diet, about 2 weeks later I saw a huge difference. What also helped was that I kept a food/behavior journal I wrote down everything and his behaviors, sleep/nap/cry/gas/ awake/poop then I was able to look back and figure out the day I ate "a muffin" he screamed for 3 hours straight. Also get used to reading labels. Kosher parve food is safe and lots of pre packaged foods have the Kosher symbol for dairy which is a U with a D. I hope this helps I did it with my son for 7 months and it got easier. ON the plus side I also lost a lot of weight in the process. :O)E Oh PS I also wrote at what time I gave him the meds which helped me figure out the times that worked best for him.

OH and I forgot to post Lactaid wont work b/c he is not allergic to lactose but to the protein found in cow's milk. With my son I could eat gaot chees and manchego cheese (sheeep's milk) just fine!

thank you! I just got the okay from Ethan's pediatrician to give the diet a try, so I am off to pick up his prevacid, and get the TED essentials. I guess you are right, on the bright side, I might lose some more weight, which in my case is always good. In a couple of weeks we'll know if Ethan is feeling better, and we'll go from there.
