Bryson (3/06), former Neocate, Nexium, and Reglan baby. Diagnosed with peanut allergy and asthma. Weaned from meds in Spring 0f 08. Brother, Parker (6/04), was also on Prevacid and Pregestimil (formula) as an infant.
Info. about Axid (long and confusing)
Is Axid a quick relief medication for reflux? Our pedi gave us a few samples of it several months ago because we were not sure if our son's asthma attack was linked to reflux. We have been off Nexium since probably January. We have not been hearing or seeing any signs of reflux until yesterday. Funny how it has started since our popcorn allergy experience. Well, last night he was miserable in bed. He was crying out in his sleep and grabbing at his skin. It is difficult to know what the problem is when your child's eczema is also breaking out and he got a hold of a piece of brother's bologna. The eczema began flaring up this weekend, so not sure if it is weather related or allergy related. He only took a tiny lick of bologna, so not sure if the crying was connected to bologna although he did break out on his butt cheeks again last night and is itching. Anyway.... I gave him a dose of Axid when I kept hearing him swallowing hard and coughing with each liquid sound. I gave him a dose and within 15 minutes he was asleep in my arms. Not sure if that helped because he was also due for Benadryl at the same time. My question after this long, confusing post is ..... will Axid give them relief quickly and can it be used as needed only. I did not get a lot of info. from pedi because she only gave it to me to use if his asthma kept flaring up to see if reflux was causing it, but we have had no more asthma problems. She is now on maternity leave. We have not seen his GI since winter because we are no longer on meds. May be time to call if reflux continues. All of this is so confusing because I am trying to figure out if all of this is connected to a food allergy. I am the one that posted about the sodium allergy and now he had a small bite of bologna and last night happened. Sorry for the detailed posts. Thank you for reading this far. amanda

Donnessa, mom to Halley born 3/10/07
Reflux (mostly) resolved at 14 months
and Addison born 8/17/09. Currently exclusively bf and on 7.5mg Prevacid
When my dd was on Axid, we were told that we would see pretty immediate results. However, it never worked for her. Hope little guy gets some relief soon!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
We had good luck with Axid - it can also make them drowsy, so we gave it at night. It works pretty similar to pepcid, so the results can occur within about 30 min of the dose, but it wears off pretty quickly too.

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
Axid is essentially Zantac. It should take about 30 minutes to work. It is an antihistimine so I would check with the doctors before giving it to him next time in conjunction with the benadryl.. i don't think you are supposed to dose them that close together (which could explain the falling asleep quickly). for mine, he has a paradoxical reaction and it actually makes him hyper sometimes instead of sleepy. it works well for us and lasts all day.
Check with your
doctor first!
