prevacid timing?
I was wondering how you galz handle giving the nightly dose of prevacid. Nolan usually gets his at 7:00 PM. Which means he has supper by 5:00. But now Nolan wants to eat supper with us. He is starting to try more table foods and we only eat at 6-6:30. So I guess I am wondering if you all give it earlier or later. What seems to work the best? I thought about giving it earlier like a 1/2 hour before we eat but then I also thought to give it right before bed like 2 hours after we eat. Is it better to have in his system before he eats or after he has new foods to settle everything down before bed? I'm sure everyone does it different but I would still like your opinions and reasoning. Thanks!!!!

katiesmommy
Tracey, mom to Katie diagnosed with GERD at 3 week.
Nolan and Katie are a couple of weeks apart and we are on your current timing with him. She has dinner at 5 of a bottle and then about 5:30-45 when we have dinner she wants to eat with us so she has pears. Then she gets prevacid at 7; 7:15 at the latest so that she has at least half an hour to let it sit before a bedtime bottle. I've wondered the same about when to give it. Since she doesn't sleep at an angle I want it fully in her system but have wondered the same as you if it's better to let it do it's job a little bit before she is asleep. She also likes to sleep on her tummy so she has that added weight. Ok, I didn't give you any advice just that we are doing/wondering the same thing! Dr. took her off of most solids so we don't have the added "new foods" to throw into the mix! Sorry!

This is our dd, Alessandra. Dx with GER 10/07. Ran the gamut with meds and now done with them (crossed fingers). Using magnesium, probiotics and prebiotic supplements. With the exception of teething and general sassy attitude, all is well now. They really CAN grow out of it!
I've actually found that giving the Prevacid late afternoon seems to do fine. We give it about 4:30-5:00 or so, then a small snack about 30 minutes later, then she can do dinner with us. I found that the timing works out well for dosing her with Mortin at night when she's teething. Allie was born about a week before Nolan, though her GER isn't severe.

Our doctor advises giving the PPI before the dinnertime (evening) meal. I think we gave Prevacid 30min before meal. Nexium is 1 hour before meal.

Our Pediatric GI said to give it a 1/2 before dinner. This way it will start working before the food gets in her tummy. We were having a lot of problems and changing the timing really did the trick. We give Katie 15mg as soon as she wakes up nothing to eat for 1/2 hour and 15 mg 1/2 hour before dinner. Many times I will give Mylanta at bedtime just to help her at night.

We were also told 30 minutes before dinner. I was told that for my own prevacid too. Something about needing an empty stomach to absorb better (??).

Our doc said it needs a certain level of acidity in the stomach, so it is best before meals. Or something like that, LOL!

Coyle Eagan. One Year Old. Doing well on Cow's Milk flavored with juice :) Drinking two bottles of Go&Grow daily. Eating solids better but still have rough days. No More Silent Reflux-that I can hear anyway.. but puking again. Zantac 2ML 2X daily.
when coy took am/pm prevacid i gave the first dose upon awakening and the second dose t 1/2 hour before bedtime bottle. it needs to be 1/2 hour before food but since it works continulously it shouldnt matter whether you do it @ 4:30 before dinner or before the bedtime bottle. hth.
